Competency: Discusses the concepts and principles of Photography

Lesson: PHOTOGRAPHY
Objective/s:
1. Identify the principles applied in photography.
2. Classify the parts of camera and its functions.
3. Create photo essay using basic skills in photography.

Concept:
PHOTOGRAPHY has been known today as fine art. With
the help of a camera, anyone may capture a nice work of art. Since
photography is considered a fine art, the different elements and
principles of art are also applied.

What is Photography?
Photography comes from two the Greek words: photo and graph.
Photo means light and graph means drawing. An image or picture is created by
means of light, that is why this is also referred to as “drawing with light”.

PRINCIPLES APPLIED IN PHOTOGRAPHY

CONTRAST – as a principle of art may be shown


using complementary colors or emphasize differences
using light and dark colors.

EMPHASIS – is a principle of art in which part of


the work stand out, to draw viewer’s eyes, there first.

HARMONY – is a consistent, orderly, or pleasing


arrangement of parts.

UNITY – is taking parts of a piece of art and unifying them into


something better as a whole.

BALANCE – is arranging the elements in a piece so that there
is an equality from one side to other.

PATTERN / RHYTHM – is simply repeating an element that will


cause the viewers eyes to move around to each element.

Understanding the elements and principles of art will make you capture a
good scene around you. Remember that photography is not just about taking photos.
It is also about applying or using the elements and principles of art.
In photography, a camera is an important tool. Camera choice depends on what the
camera can do and the abilities and interests of the photographer. Each type of
camera is different from another. The advantages of one camera can be a
disadvantage of another.
Kinds of Camera

PHONE CAMERA - with the growth of technology, taking pictures had become easy
and handy. Mobile phones now are equipped with a camera.

POINT – AND – SHOOT CAMERA – is a still camera made for easy use. It is also
called compact camera.

PARTS OF CAMERA & THEIR FUNCTIONS

A person using a camera should know the parts and their functions. It is
important in taking nice pictures. The parts vary from one camera to another.

• Shutter button: Press this button all the way to take a picture.

• Control buttons: Adjust various camera settings.

• Shooting mode dial: Change among different scene modes, adjust exposure
choices, and so on.

• Microphone: Capture audio for movie clips and voice annotations, or even
activate a sound-triggered self-timer.

• Focus-assist light: Helps the camera focus in dim lighting conditions.

• Electronic flash: Provides addition light to your scene.

• Optical viewfinder: To frame and compose your picture.

• Zoom lens and control: Magnifies or reduces the size of the image.

• Tripod socket: Allows you to attach the camera to a firm support.

• Docking port: Can be used to transfer photos, recharge the batteries, make
prints, or perform other functions.

• Battery compartment: Contains the cells that power the camera.

• Power switch: Turn the camera on or off.

• Indicator LEDs: Show the camera’s status.

• LCD (liquid crystal display) panel: The camera’s display.

• Display control/Menu button: Controls the amount of information shown in


the LCD and menus.

• Picture review: Press this button to review the pictures you have already
taken.

• Cursor pad: Navigate menu choices.

• Set/Execute button: Activate a feature or set a menu choice to the current


selection.

• Memory card slot: Accepts digital memory cards.

• USB port: Access for a USB cable.

• File-save LED: This light usually lights up to indicate that an image is being
saved to the memory card.

Many people are fascinated with photography. They may not be professional
photographers, but they take delight in taking pictures of their family, friends,
vacation, events, and celebration. You learn about people from different parts of the
world. Pictures show us scene of important and historic events. You learn events in
the past with pictures.

WHAT IS PHOTO ESSAY?

A photo essay is a collection of pictures or images that are arranged in a


specific order. To tell the progression of events, emotions, and concepts.
Pictures tell stories. Just like the series of pictures shown below. It may tell a story
about “it’s my birthday today” or “my journey to my dreams”.

Example of PHOTO ESSAY: “MY JOURNEY IN REACHING MY DREAMS”

“High School Graduation” “College Graduation” “Passed Board Exams” “Training for 6 months”

“RTC Sportsfest” “Recognition Rites” “Graduation in the Training Center.” “POLICEMAN”

STEPS IN MAKING PHOTO ESSAY

• Think about a topic or theme, which you would like to do your essay about.
Make sure your theme has a point or tells a story.
• Write down your ideas for photo composition and then choose the best ones.
• Take photographs based on the topic or theme you planned. Make sure you
have a large variety of photos to choose from.
• Make sure that your photos flow together and are easily connected visually.
• Finally, add captions explaining your photos and the story they are portrayin

“MY BEST PHOTOGRAPH”

Directions: take a picture of anything that is interesting to you. If you cannot choose
from your photo collection. Paste the picture on a bond paper. Write something
about it.

Activity 4 “THE STORY OF MY LIFE”

Procedure:
1. Take pictures based on the topic to be assigned by your teacher.
2. Choose four pictures.
3. Paste one picture per bond paper.
4. Write a story about the pictures you have chosen
5. Add one more bond paper on top of the pages for the title.
6. Fasten the pieces of bond paper.
7. You may cover it with cardboard if you wish. Your output should look like the
one below.
