SESSION OBJECTIVES
At the end of the session, you should
be able to:
1. Define and expound on the nature
of values.
2. Cite the core values of good
citizenship including their sub-values.
3. Relate or apply the concepts
discussed to the different real life
situations.
REFLECT ON THIS…
When it comes to rearing children, every
society is only 20 years away from barbarism.
Twenty years is all we have to accomplish the
task of civilizing the infants who are born into
our midst each year. These savages know
nothing of our language, our culture, our
religion, our values, our customs of
interpersonal relations…communism, fascism,
democracy, civil liberties, the rights of the
minority, respect, decency, honesty, customs,
conventions and manners. The barbarians
must be tamed if civilization is to survive.
REFLECT ON THIS…
Every baby… wants what he wants when
he wants it: his bottle, his mother’s
attention, his playmate’s toy, his uncle’s
watch. Deny these and he seethes with
rage and aggressiveness which would be
murderous where he is not so helpless. This
means that all children are born delinquent.
If permitted to continue in the self-centered
world of infancy… every child would grow
up a criminal.
Therefore…

The parents who does not

punish wrongdoing by an
infant, permits it to be done by
their teenager.
What are Values?
From Latin word “valere” which
means to be strong and vigorous

It proceeds from the premise that a

human person has to have strength
or valor in every endeavor.

It is the basis on which his strength in

facing the challenges of life should
be directed.
According to Dr. Tomas
Quintin D. Andres (1986)
“things, persons, ideas or
goals which are important to
life; anything which enables
life to be understood,
evaluated, and directed.”
According to Edgar Sheffield
Brightman
“whatever is liked, prized,
esteemed, desired,
approved, or enjoyed by
anyone at any time; it is the
actual experience of
enjoying a desired object or
activity, hence, value is an
existing realization of desire.”
Collectively…
“values of a society would be
the standards or principles for
which an act is judged to be
what is right or wrong, correct
or incorrect; it gives meaning
and direction to every
individual’s life and influence
his human behavior.”
What are Filipino Values?
“the standards or principles set
forth by the Filipino society as
basis for what is right or wrong,
the principles on which every
member of the Filipino society
should persevere to attain in
order to reach the ultimate
realization of life, regarding his
person and in relation to his
family and society in general.”
Three Main Traits of Filipino
Values
Source: factsandetails.com & Philippines Australia
Business Council)

Personalism
Familialism
Particularism
Personalism
“is a Filipino trait of giving
importance to interpersonal
or face-to-face encounters.
Filipinos usually extends their
work or services through
‘personal touch’ or handles
problem solving through
good personal relations.”
Familialism
“focuses on the welfare and
interest of the family over those
of the community; it takes into
consideration the welfare of the
family and not the individual; the
family’s honor, not the personal
image, that is at stake when a
family member makes a
mistake.”
Particularism
“relates to the strong family
influence on the individual or
group behavior; conformity to
proper codes of conduct yields
rewards of cooperation while
non-conformity results to
withdrawal of support.”
Three Main Obligations that
underlie Filipino Values
Relational (pakikipagkapwa)

Emotional (damdamin)

Moral (karangalan)
SOME OF THE
VALUES IN THE
FILIPINO SOCIETY
UTANG NA LOOB
“this altruistic feeling must
voluntarily come from within
the person himself, kusang
loob; and should not be
demanded by coercing the
person who has utang na loob,
so as blind his sense of
judgment.”
UTANG NA LOOB
1. By demanding the return of
favor, would you wish to
become indebted in return?
2. And when indebted, would
you want that person to act
the same way when they
are demanding the return of
the favor?
BAHALA NA
“it reflects the Filipino’s
dependence on the
supernatural being and on
fate; this tends to move toward
the commonly received
procrastination character of
the Filipino.”
MAŃANA HABIT
“this is a Filipino trait that
enforces procrastination –
practice of putting off work to
be done in the near future or in
the last minute.”
NINGAS KUGON
“it means that Filipinos tend to
have a strong enthusiasm in
the beginning of each work or
endeavor but gradually slows
down and lose their drive to
work and finish the job.”
AMOR PROPIO
“a sense of self-esteem or self-
respect that prevents a person
from swallowing his pride; also
means ego defensiveness or
maintaining one’s dignity and
personal pride; often implies a
vindictive reaction to questioning
an individual’s action, integrity, or
honor.”
BAYANIHAN
“a core essence of the Filipino
people; it is helping out one’s
neighbor as a community, and
doing a task together, thus
lessening the workload and
making the job easier; it is also
called ‘community spirit’.”

GOOD CITIZENSHIP
VALUES
PAGKAMAKA-DIYOS
PAGKAMAKA-TAO
PAGKAMAKA-BANSA
PAGKAMAK-KALIKASAN
PAGKAMAKA-DIYOS
FAITH IN THE ALMIGHTY
Faith may refer to the deeply-
rooted submission to a divine
being, person, or belief system.
Trusting and believing are two
essential elements of faith. It is
best expressed in ACTIONS.
PAGKAMAKA-DIYOS
RESPECT FOR LIFE
It is respecting the precept that
every life is a gift and therefore
deserves to be born and be
given the opportunity to show hi
worth to the society. Man has the
right to be treated with dignity
and all his basic human rights
upheld and protected.
PAGKAMAKA-DIYOS
ORDER
It is manifested when situations move
in their proper course. Customs and
traditional values set the standard of
behavior in the countryside. In
modern communities, legal
framework is enforced by the
government which acts as the single
authority task to enforce rules and
determine the rationality of an
action.
PAGKAMAKA-DIYOS
WORK
It refers to the use of one’s
physical and mental abilities to
satisfy his needs. Engaging in
productive work adds dignity
and is also a way of showing
appreciation to God-given gift
of talents and abilities.
PAGKAMAKA-DIYOS
CONCERN FOR THE FAMILY
It is in the family where a young
individual begins to develop his
character and establishes the
foundation of his future. It
would be impossible to build a
strong nation while positive
family values are kept in the
sideline.
FATHER’S MISTAKE BY BEL SAN LUIS (2004)

One night, a father came to a

parent-teacher conference in a
city high school. During a talk
with one of his son’s teachers, the
father broke down and began to
cry.
After he regained his composure,
the father apologized, saying,
“My son no longer lives with me.
But I still love him and I want to
know how he’s doing in school.”
FATHER’S MISTAKE BY BEL SAN LUIS (2004)

The father then told the teacher

how his wife and four children
had left him that afternoon.
He was a building contractor and
sometimes worked sixteen hours
a day. Naturally, he saw little of
his family, and then slowly grew
father and farther apart.
FATHER’S MISTAKE BY BEL SAN LUIS (2004)

Then the father said something

sad. He said: “I wanted to buy
my wife and kids all the things I
had dreamed of giving them. But
in the process, I got so involved in
working that I forgot about what
they needed most: a father who
was around at nights to give
them love and support.”
PAGKAMAKA-TAO
LOVE
Love strengthens the
foundation of the family and
other social groupings. It is the
strongest force within the
human community. It provides
deeper meaning to the
purpose of human existence.
PAGKAMAKA-TAO
FREEDOM
Freedom is not absolute since
we share social and physical
spaces with other people. Our
freedom ends in the exact
point where the rights of others
are already threatened by our
own actions or omissions.
PAGKAMAKA-TAO
PEACE
It is the prevalence of harmony
in all facets of social
relationship.
PAGKAMAKA-TAO
TRUTH
Truth in itself does not always go
in conformity with what is
acceptable to society. Some
individuals have the tendency to
twist the truth for self-serving
purpose, but in the end,
circumstances always find a way
to let the posterity live within the
atmosphere of truth.
THE TRUTH ABOUT LIES (2004)

Lies are said in the place of

truth…
Why not prefer to tell the truth
than settle for a lie?
There are no half-truths or white
lies…
It’s either you say the truth or
tell a lie!
THE TRUTH ABOUT LIES (2004)

A million lies cannot make up a

single truth…
You can never transform a lie into
truth.
It’s easier to tell the truth than tell
a lie…
With the truth, you merely have
to state the facts:
With lies, you’d have to cook up
a thousand alibis.
THE TRUTH ABOUT LIES (2004)

You’ll know when your lies

have caught up with you…
When you begin to believe in
them as being the truth.
In the end, we find but a single
truth about lies…
That there is No Truth and No
Good in Lies.
PAGKAMAKA-TAO
JUSTICE
It is generally expressed in two
ways: distributive and retributive.
Distributive justice maintains the
idea of social equality by giving
people what they deserve.
Retributive justice promotes
constructive punishment as
corrective measure for erroneous
or felonious actions committed
against a person or the society.
TO EVERY MAN HIS DUE
Institute for Development Education Center for Research and Communication (2004)

There was once a poor farmer

who would come to town
every day in order to supply a
baker with homemade
bibingka. In exchange for five
pounds of bibingka, the baker
would give the farmer five
founds of bread for his family.
TO EVERY MAN HIS DUE
Institute for Development Education Center for Research and Communication (2004)

One day, the baker decided

to weigh the bibingka. He
discovered that the bibingka
was one pound short. This
made the baker very angry,
and he accused the farmer of
having cheated him.
But the farmer very calmly
declared,
TO EVERY MAN HIS DUE
Institute for Development Education Center for Research and Communication (2004)

“You see sir, I am very poor

and have no weights at home.
So I take the five pounds of
bread you give me and use it
as a standard. In this way, I can
be sure of giving you an equal
amount of bibingka.”
PAGKAMAKA-BANSA
UNITY
It is the state of being one and
in harmony with one another.
Unity is the most important
element needed by any
society to achieve stability and
progress.
PAGKAMAKA-BANSA
EQUALITY
It implies providing
standardized or uniform rights
and privileges as well as duties
and obligations to every
citizen.
SKULLS BY ANDREW MARIA ALMONTE (2004)

One day, a group of skulls in

the cemetery had a
conversation.
“Hey,” said a skull to another,
“who were you when you were
alive?”
“I was a king,” answered the
skull with an air of pride.
SKULLS BY ANDREW MARIA ALMONTE (2004)

“Yes, I was once his slave,”

replied another skull. “He was a
tyrant, a ruthless, merciless
king!”
“How dare you speak about
me like that!” countered the
king-skull. “I am your king,
remember?”
SKULLS BY ANDREW MARIA ALMONTE (2004)

“Shut-up!” shouted the slave

skull. “You are no longer my
king nor am I your slave
anymore! We are the same
now-rotten skulls!”
PAGKAMAKA-BANSA
RESPECT FOR LAW/GOV’T
While the people are obliged to
respect the government and to
follow all laws, the government is
equally mandated to observe
the laws, protect the rights of
every citizen and implement
programs necessary for the
betterment of life of the general
public.
PAGKAMAKA-BANSA
PATRIOTISM
It is the state in which a person
willfully expresses pride and
respect towards his country’s
culture, achievements and
aspirations.
PAGKAMAKA-BANSA
PROMOTION OF COMMON
GOOD
Common good refers to that
condition that is beneficial to all
or most members of the society.
Thus, promoting common good
equates with giving importance
to the general welfare of the
people.
PAGKAMAKA-KALIKASAN
All forms of life are dependent on
nature. Environmentalism is
encouraged to counter the
various environmental problems
which include climate change,
deforestation, damaged water
resources, depletion of mineral
resources, air pollution, solid
waste disposal and many more.
