Reading Skills

II. Project Proponent

The proponents of this project include five second year college students of Bachelor of
Secondary Education Major in Filipino from Daniel B. Pena Memorial College Foundation
(DBPMCF).

III. Project Rationale

To advocate the importance of education, especially the significance of being able to
read at a young age, this project is being proposed as a mean for the student proponents or
tutors to exercise their skills in teaching and as an opportunity for the underprivileged children
in the island of San Miguel, particularly in Rawis, to enjoy their rights for education despite their
financial incapabilities.

IV. Project Objectives

 Aid and help the project beneficiaries in familiarizing the English alphabet and how to
pronounce the sounds in reading words and phrases.
 Encourage the underprivileged children to still continue to learn despite their financial
incapabalities through inspiring them during tutoring sessions.
 Build and promote sociability among the tutors and project beneficiaries during tutoring
sessions.
 Expose the tutors in a teaching-learning environment where they can practice their
teaching skills that will benefit them in their journey as future educators.
 Create a successful project which can inspire other college students and local officials to
support reading programs and volunteer in similar projects for underpriveleged
children.
V. Project Description
This project will be a collaborative effort wherein the student proponents will be seeking
for help and support from their local barangay officials especially in the facility that is going to
be used. The conduct of this project will be at the Barangay Day Care Center located at Zone-4
Rawis San Miguel, Tabaco City and will last for four weeks and one. Since it will be in a public
facility, safety measures like wearing of facemasks and social distancing will be observed. Tutors
and volunteers will also be providing sanitizers like alcohol for the children for the safety of
every project beneficiaries.
During every session which will happen every Saturday, tutors will be preparing simple
reading materials or audio-visual clips which they can utilize in teaching the beneficiaries.
Flashcards and children's story books will be used as well. The tutoring can be done in a
classoroom teaching environment where the teacher is in front and teaching all the students at
the same time. The tutoring can also be a one-on-one type of teaching especially with children
who are having difficulties in group discussions.
At the end of every session, the beneficiaries will be assesed through reading any given
material in front where the tutors can still guide them in doing so. Snacks will also be provided
for the beneficiaries during or after every session.
