A. Mention the name of the presenters on the video and fill in their jobs
and tools in the workplace!
Who is s/he? What does s/he do?
James He’s a resident engineer
who’s currently working on
a project called “Blue Plain
Tunnels”. It has the purpose
to clean the Washington DC
rivers and also prevent the
overflows.
Maggie Jake She and her team went to
Haiti to help the people there
who suffer to have an access
to clean water due to the
earthquake that damaged the
system. They made a few
repairements so the Haiti’s
people could enjoy the clean
water again.
Erin White He’s in charge of designing
the hurricane-proof
retractable roof at the
Marlins Parks in Florida
What does s/he uses in the
workplace?
He uses this kind of drill that
does all the work below the
surface, it bores
horizontally underground
and it holds back all of the
earth pressures and the
hydrostatic forces, it also
allows him to install the
precast rings made of
concrete precast segments
and that ring forms the
pipe that will be there
permanently after they're
finished digging. He’s also
using the safety equipments
such as helmet, vest, safety
shoes, etc.
They used a wrench to fix
the valve, and I believe there
are a lot of other tools that
is not shown in the video.
I don’t really know exactly
what he’s using. But from
the video, I can conclude
that he’s the “man behind
the scenes” who did most of
the calculation to made the
perfect results for the project
that he’s working on. He
scoured the internet and
 found some equations that
are put out by NASA and
through those equations
he can actually calculate
the plight of the batted
ball and all different
angles of the ball to make
sure that the shape of the
roof that was above the
playing field would never
come in contact with the
ball.

B. Answer the following questions!

1. How do you explain this statement, “civil engineering is everywhere”?

Civil engineer is truly everywhere. You need it when you bulid your house, to
build the road, bridge, buildings, drainage system, etc. that’s is why civil engineer
is one of the most important job in the world. They help you to create the best
infrastructures that you need.

2. How do civil engineers help improve the lives of the people?

For example, there is a village that need a bridge to transport to the central
midtown and one day that bridge collapse. Government will need the services of
the civil engineers to build the bridge again. It means that engineers helps us
almost in every aspects of our lives.

3. Do you want to be one of the civil engineers in the video? Why do you prefer one
to the others?
For me, I want to be like Mr. Erin White. I am the kind of person who loves to
watch sports events and also play the sports itself. I would be very happy if I am
able to help the company to build the proper sports venue so the event can be held
perfectly, and both sports teams and crowds can enjoy the events to the fullest.
LANGUAGE PRACTICE
A. Put the verbs in brackets into the correct forms of Simple Present
Continuous.
Fiona Bella is a graduate site engineer for engineering company Costain. She
is explaining what it is like to work in the industry. She is currently working in east
London on the Crossrail project. “Hello, I am Fiona. This is my office. Everyday I
have different jobs to be done in this project. Today, I am translating designs onto
the construction site, so my time is split between the office and the site. Later on this
day, I am going to the construction site. I (plan) to supervise and check the
construction activities. This is my friend Jono. He is a consultant in this company. We
can not talk with him now, since now he is focusing on design work. In this project,
we also communicating with Adel, another consultant. She is keeping an eye on the
physical construction and discussing with clients and contractors, now on the
construction site. I can say that becoming a civil engineer is a very rewarding job –
there is a great sense of teamwork that comes through creating something and facing
challenges together.”

B. Describe the pictures below. Use simple present continues, to

describe what they are wearing and doing!

Based on the picture above, it looks like the person is a Land Surveyor. We can see it
from the tools that he’s using, it is named “Theodolite”, a common tools that a Land
Surveyor oftenly uses. It has the function to measure angles between designated
visible points in the horizontal and vertical planes.

From my point of view of the picture above, it looks like the 2 people are a
supervisors. They’re in the field to observe the ongoing construction process over
there. As we can see, they’re keeping the safety regulations by wearing the safety
equipments such as helmet, vest, safety shoes, etc.

Based from the picture above, I can draw the conclusion that they are the contractor,
planning consultant, and the supervisor consultant. They’re discussing about the
working drawing of their infrastructure.
