Selena Quintanilla

•she was born on April 16, 1971, in Lake Jackson Texas


- She was of Mexican and Cherokee descent and was the youngest daughter of
Abraham Quintanilla, Jr. and Marcella Ofelia Zamora.
•Selena's start as a singer when she was 9 when her father saw in her a talent
for singing. So he formed a band with his brothers, Selena was a singer, A. B
Quintanilla on bass, and Suzette Quintanilla on drums.

 she began his musical career at the age of ten, in 1981


-Alongside his brothers Suzette and Abraham Quintanilla, when the band was
formed they called themselves "Los dinos con Selena" but as time went by it
became "Selena y Los dinos". They began singing in the Mexican restaurant
of their father "papa gayo's" but the business did not prosper and broke with
the fall in oil prices in the 1980s, after that Abraham Quintanilla became the
manager, and they began playing on street corners, weddings, 15´s party´s,
and fairs.

 In 1984, selena recorded her first lp, "selena y los dinos", for Freddie
record
Despite wanting to sing only in English, selena recorded songs of the tex-mex
genre. During rehearsals for her album, selena learned Spanish phonetically
with the help of her father.

 her album alpha wins the revelation of the year award and she wins the
award for best female vocalist at the tejano music awards in 1987

At the American school of correspondence academic institution in Chicago.
She was also accepted to Louisiana state university, but she enrolled at the
university of Miramar, California, taking a career in business administration.

• Selena released her first professional album with EMI, in October 1989

• Selena released her second studio album, "ven Conmigo", in 1990.


Three songs from ven Conmigo were released as singles; "Ya ves", "la
tracalera", and "baila esta cumbia” the latter as a Mexican cumbia. Its
popularity grew in Mexico where a compilation album with the name of the
song "baila esta cumbia" was released. This album was certified ed platinum
by the Mexican association of producers of phonograms and videograms
(amprofon), with sales of 150,000 units.

• in 1990 Yolanda Saldivar creates Selena's fan club


Saldivar got that idea after attending one of Selena's concerts in SAN
Antonio. Quintanilla approved Saldivar's request, believing that the fans club
would make Selena more famous. Saldivar soon became Selena's friend and
trusted person in the family

• 1991, Selena and Chris Perez


Selena began a romantic relationship with her band's guitarist Chris perez,
who later became her husband.

• in 1991 a Salvadoran singer Alvaro Torres composed a song to sing


with Selena.
In 1992 the video clip was made, being the first video that Selena recorded.
The music video earned Selena and Torres two nominations at the 1992
billboard music awards, and for the duo of the year at the 1992 Tejano music
awards.

• on April 2, 1992, Selena and Perez decided to marry


The wedding took place in Nueces county without Selena's father's approval.

• in May 1992 he released his third studio album, “entre a mi Mundo”


his album was at number one on "billboard" for eight consecutive months and
was certified platinum by the RIAA for the sale of 600,000 copies. From the
album are four singles: Como la flor, ¿que creias? , la carcacha, and amame.
where the lead single, "Como la flor", became Selena's flagship song;

Live! It won a Grammy for best Mexican-American music album at the 36th
grammy awards in May 1994, "live! It was nominated for best album of the
year by the billboard Latin music awards. at the 1994 Tejano music awards,
live! It won the album of the year category. in lo Nuestro awards, the album
was nominated in the category best Mexican regional album of the year. 107
live! It was certified platinum by the RIAA for the sale of 500,000 copies,

• in 1994, he began designing and manufacturing a clothing line and released


his fourth studio album, amor Prohibido
She opened two boutiques called "Selena etc." one in corpus Christi and
another one in San Antonio, but Saldivar ran both stores, as the Quintanilla
family was impressed with the way she ran the Quintanilla fan club and was in
negotiations to open another in Monterrey, Mexico, and Puerto Rico.
Amor Prohibido had four singles: Amor Prohibido, bidi bidi bom bom, no me
queda mas, and Fotos y Recuerdos. The album was certified double platinum
by the RIAA for the sale of two million copies in the United States. Forbidden
love is on the best-selling album list in the United States during 1995.

• in 1994 Selena became better known in central and South America


All this after his song "wherever you are" with the group barrio boyzz, with
which his label began preparations for their first album in English

•on February 26, 1995, he dedicated his success to a grand concert at the
astrodome in Houston, Texas.
This being his most emblematic concert and the one that ended up
consecrating his success

• she died on 31 March 1995 in Corpus Christi at the age of 23


On April 1 at the bayfront plaza in corpus Christi, a vigil was held that
attracted 3,000 fans and during the event, it was announced that a public
display of the coffin would be held at the bayfront auditorium the next day.
On April 3, 1995, six hundred guests, mostly family members, attended
Selena's funeral at seaside memorial park in Corpus Christi, Texas, which was
broadcast live on a corpus Christi and SAN Antonio radio station. Among the
celebrities who attended Selena's funeral were Roberto Pulido, Bobby Pulido,
David Lee Garza, Emilio Navara, Laura Canales, Elsa Garcia, La Mafia, Ram
Herrera, imagen latina, and Pete Astudillo. A special mass held on the same
day at the Los Angeles memorial sports arena attracted a crowd of 4,000.
