ZONAL ISOLATION

Saudi Aramco utilizes zonal isolation kits to isolate unwanted zones in open holes.
These unwanted intervals (fractured or loss circulation zones) are isolated by setting
mechanical open hole packers at the top and bottom of the zone and using blank pipes
in between the packers.

There are three types of Zonal Isolation Kit:

1) Plug and Abandon Kit

2) Scab Liner
3) Casing Shoe Isolation Kit (Non Cementing)

1.0 PLUG AND ABANDON KIT

Plug and Abandon Kit (P&A Kit) is used to isolate a fracture or a watered out zone
on bottom part of the open hole. The P&A Kit consist of: Setting Sleeve on top of
the assembly, 2 each of Mechanical Open packers, blank pipes and Bull plug at
the bottom part of assembly as shown below for 4½” P&A kill for 6-1/8” hole.

2.0 SCAB LINER

Scab Liner is Zonal Isolation Kit that will isolate the unwanted zone in the middle
part of the open hole. In this case, fracture zone or loss circulation zone is in the
middle of the formation. The Scab liner consist of : Setting Sleeve on top of the
assy, 4 ea of Mechanical Open packers, blank pipes and Wireline reentry guide at
the bottom part of assy as shown below for 4½” size for 6-1/8” hole.

3.0 CASING SHOE ISOLATION KIT (NON CEMENTING)

Casing Shoe Isolation Non

Cementing Kit version will isolate
the unwanted zone below the last
casing shoe or window in the open
hole without spotting any cement. In
this case, unwanted zone like
Anhydrite, loss circulation zone, hi-
pressure zone is on the top of the
open hole. Casing Shoe Isolation
Non Cementing Kit consist of: Liner
Hanger with Liner Top Packer, 2 ea
of Mechanical Open packers, blank
pipes and Wireline Reentry guide at
the bottom part of assy as shown
below for 4½” size for 6-1/8” hole.
