MODULE 12
PETA

Read the discussions provided for the topic and answer the following questions:

1. Why is Ptolemy’s geocentric astronomy inaccurate?

 Geocentric model could not fully explain the changes in the appearance of the planets
between the Earth and the Sun. Furthermore, Galileo's observations of Jupiter's moons
made it clear that celestial bodies do move about centers other than the Earth

2. Why was Copernicus’s idea on the model of the universe described as

revolutionary?
 Because heliocentric model explains that only the moon orbits around the earth and not
the sun. This idea has become universally accepted as the truth about the Earth's position
in the universe.

3. Who is Tycho Brahe? What error(s) did he discover about the astronomical table
created based on Ptolemy’s model of the universe? Base on Copernicus’ model of
the universe?
 Tycho Brahe was an astronomer who also made planetary observation and proposed
another model of the Universe ‘Tychonic System”, A Geo-heliocentric model.
 The errors that have been discovered in Geocentric Model are some planets do not follow
the Earth and they seem to move backward. In Heliocentric Model, he could not detect
parallax in his observations and he had no sense that Earth was moving.

4. What did Brahe conclude about these errors?

 He proposed a model of the solar system that was intermediate between Ptolemaic and
Copernican model.

5. What did Brahe do to gather more accurate observations?

 By the use of Naked eye observatory and Quarter circle measurement device, he first
compiled extensive data on the planet mars and then hired Kepler as his “research
assistant” to prove that his model of the Universe is consistent with the available data.

6. What scientific attitude did Brahe show during his 20-year observation in Hven?
 His interest in astronomy and observations of the night sky.

7. What can be considered as Brahe’s greatest legacy to the world of astronomy?

 Brahe’s observation of the supernova in 1572 and of the comet 1577/1578 must also be
considered as his greatest legacy because it has impacted our view in space and stars.

8. Who is Kepler? What is considered as Brahe’s greatest legacy to the world of

astronomy?
 Johannes Kepler was a German astronomer who proposed the Law of Planetary Motion.
 Brahe’s accurate measurements and observations became the basis for the following
generations of scientists and now considered as his greatest legacy.

9. How did Brahe pave the way for Kepler’s discovery?

 Brahe compiled extensive astronomical records, which Kepler eventually used to prove
heliocentrism and to calculate the orbital laws.

10. How would you describe Kepler’s model of the universe?

 Before Kepler’s Law of Planetary motion is developed, he used the precise data that
Tycho had collected, Kepler discovered that the orbit of Mars was an ellipse only then he
developed his discoveries. His model states that every planet moves along an ellipse, with
the Sun located at a focus of the ellipse.
