INFORMATION AND

COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY TO

STUDENT'S ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

Background of the Study

Telecommunications in the Philippines has been segmented prior to 1928.

Users could only start calling people within your own little town. In 1994, Benjie Tan, who

worked for ComNet, set up the first Internet connection in the Philippines at a PLDT network

center in Makati City. Information and Communication Technology (ICT) applies to all

communication technologies, including the internet, wireless networks, mobile phones,

computers, applications, software, video calls, instant messaging, as well as other network apps

and services which allow users to physically connect, download, save, transfer and manipulate

information. In education sector in this time of pandemic, ICT has been an important source

of creativity and performance improvement. Academic performance is the measurement of

the performance of students on their different academic subjects. Student’s academic

performance is measured using grade point average (GPA). And students are seen being

creative with their own potential and growing in their academic performance using ICT, even

though we do not expect the sudden switching of teaching method, ICT has helped the students

to enhance, to improve the communication, and to make progress.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has been a big help for

a lot of us but we are actually not taking time to acknowledge it, instead, we are just ensuring to

take advantage of what it brings to us on our everyday life which helps us to do things a lot

more easier. Distance learning does not always allow teachers to make adjustments and support

students, as they would do in the classroom (Dr Inge Moleenar, 2020). In education, particularly

in this time of pandemic, students may find that this digital teaching strategies are either too easy

or too complicated, resulting to disengagement and a decrease in student’s learning.

Purpose of the Study

The purpose of the study is to show analysis on how Information and

Communication Technology (ICT) will influence the academic performance of selected students

of AMA Basic Education of Las Piñas and Holy Rosary Academy of Las Piñas City S.Y 2020-

2021. In addition, the study will focus on indicating how ICT has helped the students in their

studies during this time of pandemic.

Research Questions

1. How frequent do you use ICT tools/gadgets?

2. How ICT tools are being used in your school?

3. Based on your experience, how knowledgeable you are when using ICT
tools/gadgets?

4. In your own perspective, how do you think ICT has helped you on your studies
especially this time of pandemic?
Significance of the Study

This study will benefit the following:

Students

This will help the students to know how ICT will influence their academic

performance and this realization is going to be their reason for them to excel more in this

platform.

Teachers

This will be beneficial to teachers, especially to teachers that are still new in the

teaching profession. Through this research teachers may discover a lot about teaching strategies

and methods that includes Information and Communication Technology (ICT), knowing that

there is on-going pandemic and we use a lot of technology nowadays.

Future Researchers

The ideas presented will be a useful reference data that will give them a background and

an overview who would plan to make any related study about Information and Communication

Technology (ICT).

Scope and Delimitation

This study will focus on how Information and Communication Technology

will affect the student’s academic performance. The researcher aims to discuss how ICT tools are

being used and how it will influence the academic performance of the students. This study will

be conducted on AMA Basic Education of Las Piñas and Holy Rosary Academy of Las Piñas

City. The researcher will interview and choose Grade 11 students of S.Y 2020-2021 as
respondents.
