ACTIVE VS PASSIVE VOICE

(1) The baseball player hits the ball.


(2) The ball is hit.

 Perhatikan pada kalimat (1) the ball bertindak sebagai objek, sedangkan pada kalimat
(2) the ball bertindak sebagai subjek. Makna kedua kalimat tidak berubah, tapi
terdapat perubahan struktur kalimat. Kalimat pertama disebut dengan active voice
sedangkan kalimat kedua disebut dengan passive voice.

Active voice adalah bentuk kalimat yang subjeknya bertindak sebagai pelaku suatu aksi atau
tindakan, sedangkan passive voice adalah bentuk kalimat yang subjeknya mendapatkan atau
menerima suatu aksi atau tindakan.

FORMING THE PASSIVE

Note : In the passive, the object of an active verb becomes the subject of the passive verb: the
boy in (a) becomes the passive verb in (b).

 ACTIVE (c) An accident happened

 PASSIVE (d) NO CHANGE

Note : kalimat di bagian (c) tidak bisa di ubah ke dalam bentuk pasif karena kalimat tersebut
menggunakan kata kerja intransitif. Hanya Kata Kerja Transitif yang Dapat Digunakan
dalam Kalimat Pasif.

Karakteristik kata kerja transitif (transitive verb) adalah berupa action verb dan mempunyai
objek langsung, seperti kick, clean, write, clean, paint, eat, etc. Sementara itu, kata kerja
intransitif, seperti happen, sleep, come, live, agree, appear, arrive, look, remain, sit, stand,
stay, sneeze, seem tidak digunakan dalam kalimat pasif karena tidak memerlukan objek.

Marry helps the boy The boy is helped by Marry

Marry is helping the boy The boy is being helped by Marry

Change the active into passive.

1. Shakespeare wrote that play.


= That play was written by Shakespeare.
2. Waitresses and waiters serve customers.
= The customers are served by waitresses and waiters.
3. The teacher is going to explain the lesson.
= The lesson is going to be explained by teacher.
4. Shirley has suggested a new idea.
= A new idea has been suggested by Shirley.
5. Bill will invite Ann to the party.
= Ann will be invited to the party by Bill.
6. Alex is preparing that report.
= The report is being prepared by Alex.
7. Two horses were pulling the farmer’s wagon.
= The farmer’s wagon was being pulled by two horses.
8. Kathy had returned the book to the library.
= The book had been returned by Kathy to the library.
9. By this time tomorrow, the president will have made the announcement.
= By this time tomorrow, The announcement will have been made by the
president.
10. I didn’t write that note. Jim wrote it.
= That note was written by Jim not me.
11. Alice didn’t make that pic. Did Mrs French make it?
= That pic wasn’t make by Alice did Mr. French make it?
12. Does prof. Jackson teach the course? I know that Prof. Adams doesn’t teach it.
= Does the course is taught by Prof. Jackson? I know that course don’t taught by
Prof. Adams.
13. Mrs. Andrew has not signed three papers yet. Has Mr. Andrew signed them yet?
= Those papers haven’t been signed by Mrs. Andrew yet. Have been they signed
by Mrs. Andrew yet?
14. Is Mr. Brown painting your house?
= Is your house being painted by Mr. Brown
15. His tricks won’t fool me
= I will not be fooled by his tricks.

Activity 2

Change the passive into active.

1. That sentence was written by Ommar.


= Omar wrote the sentences.
2. Our papers are going to be collected by the teacher.
= The teacher is going to collect our papers.
3. Was the electric bulb invented by Thomas Edison?
= Did Thomas Edison invent the electric bulb?
4. The speed limit on highway 5 is not obeyed by most drivers.
= Most drivers don’t obey the speed limit on highway 5.
5. Have you been informed of a proposed increase in our rent by the building
superintendent?
= Has the building superintendent informed you as proposed increase in our
rent?
Activity 3

Change the active to passive if possible. Some verbs are intransitive and cannot be changed.

= I was interviewed by assistant manager.
9. It rained hard yesterday.
= Not change
10. A hurricane destroyed the small village.
= The small fishing village was destroyed by hurricane

12. A large vase stands in the corner of our front hallways.

13. The children seemed happy when they went to the zoo.
