MODELS OF
THE UNIVERSE
pythagorean model
eudoxus' model
Also a geocentric model, in this model
it is believed that the Sun, Moon,
planets, and stars are all orbiting
the Earth inside of Eudoxus’ spheres.
And it moves in a perfect circular
motion and is also believed to have 27
concentric spheres.
aristotle's model
It had a series of 53 concentric,
crystalline, transparent spheres
rotating on different axes. Each
sphere was centered on a stationary
Earth so the model was both geocentric
and homocentric. One thing different
about it is that it has a outermost
sphere that is the domain of what he
called as prime mover.
ptolemy's model
It is a geocentric model,
believed that the earth is at
the center of the universe,
with the moon orbiting the
closest to earth followed by
mercury, venus and then the
Sun. The other planets were
situated further from the sun.
Lastly, the outmost
sphere was where all the stars
were located in the
48 constellations that Ptolemy
described in his text.
