What Is It

Now, what is table of values? A table of values is a list of numbers that can be
generated from a quadratic function, where the given values of x are substituted to the
function to solve for the f(x). The values of y depend on the given values of x. X values are
called the domain of the function or the first coordinate of an ordered pair (x, y) and the y
values are the range of the function or the second coordinate of an ordered pair (x,y).

Illustrative Example 1.
Consider the table of values below.

x 0 1 2 3 4
F(x) 5 6 13 26 45

The ordered pairs are (0,5), (1, 6), (2, 13), (3, 26), and (4, 45).

A Quadratic function can be written in two forms:

(a) Standard Form : f(x) = ax2 + bx + c

(b) Vertex Form: f(x) = a(x –h)2 + k

To determine the equation of quadratic function given the above table of values:

Step 1. Choose any 3 ordered pairs in the given table of values.

(0, 5), (1, 6), (2, 13)

2
Step 2. Substitute the ordered pairs (x,f(x)) in f(x) = ax 2 + bx + c.
5 = a (0)2 + b (0) + c c=5
2
6 = a (1) + b (1) + c a+b+5=6 (1)
13 =a (2)2 + b (2) + c 4a + 2b + 5 = 13 (2)

Step 3. Solve simultaneously.

Solving (1) and (2) simultaneously:
a+b+5=6 a+b=6–5
a+b=1
b=1–a

Simplify (2) and substitute b = 1 – a in the resulting equation.

4a + 2b = 13 - 5
4a + 2(1 – a) = 8
4a + 2 – 2a = 8
2a = 8 – 2
2a = 6
a =
a =3

Solve for b: b=1–a

b=1–3
b = -2

Step 4. Substitute the values of a, b, and c in the function f(x) = ax2 + bx + c.

Since a = 3, b = -2, and c = 5, therefore, the quadratic function is f(x) = 3x2 – 2x + 5.

____ + 5 = -3
2b = -3 + ____
2b = ____
b=

What Is It
What is the graph of a quadratic function?
Parabolas are the resulting graphs of quadratic functions, and are special curves with
maximum or minimum points. The maximum or minimum point in a parabola is termed the
vertex (h, k) where h is the axis of symmetry. A parabola can cross the x-axis once, twice,
or never. The x – coordinates of these intersections are called x-intercepts.

Now, let’s take a look on the graph of the

quadratic function f(x) = x2 – 2x – 3 given on the right.
The graph opens upward and it has minimum point (1, -
4) and its axis of symmetry is x =1. It also shows that
the graph crosses the x-axis at x = 3 and x = -1; these
are the x-intercepts of the graph of the function.
Similarly, 3 and -1 are the zeros of the function.
The equation of the quadratic function can
easily be determined by using the form of a quadratic
function y = a(x -h)2 + k; but, only when the vertex and
any point on the parabola are clearly seen.
Source: Grade 9: Learner’s Manual

Illustrative example 2.
Find the equation of the quadratic function from the graph below.

Source: Grade 9: Learner’s Manual

Solution:
The vertex of the graph of the quadratic function is (2, -3). The graph passes through
the point (5, 0). By replacing x and y with 5 and 0, respectively, and h and k with 2 and -3,
respectively, we have

y = a(x -h)2 + k
0 = a(5 – 2)2 + (-3)
0 = a(3)2 – 3
3 = 9a
a=
a=
Thus, the quadratic equation is y = (x – 2)2 – 3 or y = x2 - x - .

What Is It

Study the mathematical concept below.

A value of x that satisfies the quadratic equation ax 2 + bx + c = 0 is called a root of

the equation. Similarly, the roots of quadratic equation correspond to the zeros of a function
f(x) = x2 + bx + c.

In solving the zeros of f(x) = x2 – 2x – 3 by factoring, the function is equated by 0.

That is,
x2 – 2x – 3 = 0 Equate f(x) to 0
(x – 3)(x + 1) = 0 factor the left side
x – 3 = 0 or x + 1 = 0 apply zero product property
x=3 x = -1 simplify
The zeros of f(x) = x2 – 2x – 3 are -1 and 3.

12
The process done can be reversed to find a quadratic function if the zeros are given.
For instance, the quadratic function f(x) whose zeros are 4 and 7 is
f(x) = (x – 4)(x – 7)

= x2 - 11x + 28

In general, if the zeros are r1 and r2, we can express the quadratic function as
f(x) = (x – r1)(x -r2)

Multiplying the two binomials the results is:

f(x) = x2 – r1x -r2x + r1 r2

or f(x) = x2 – (r1 + r2)x + r1 r2 (1)

Now, consider the quadratic function f(x) = ax2 + bx + c. Solving for the zeros of f(x)
means equating it to 0. That is, ax2 + bx + c = 0.

Or x2 + x + =0 (2)

Comparing the functions f(x) = x2 – (r1 + r2)x + r1r2 and f(x) = x2 + x + suggests that
-(r1 +r2) = and r1r2 =

The comparison illustrates the relationships between the zeros and the coefficients of
a quadratic function.

Illustrative Example 1.

a. Determine the equation of the quadratic functions given the zeros 3 and -1.

Solution:
f(x) = (x-3)(x +1)
= x2 + x – 3x – 3
= x2 - 2x – 3

Thus, the equation of the quadratic function whose zeros are 3 and -1 is f(x) = x2 –
2x -3.

b. Determine the equation of the quadratic functions whose zeros are -5 and 4.

Solution:
r1= -5 and r2 = 4
= – (r1 + r2) = -(-5 + 4) = - (-1) = 1

= (r1 )( r2) = (-5)(4) = -20

Therefore, the equation of the quadratic function whose zeros are -5 and 4 is f(x) = x2
+ x – 20.

To deepen your understanding on how to determine the equation of a quadratic function

given zeros, perform Activity 3.

5. What is the vertex of the graph?

What Is It

Now you will explore situations and real-life problems that can be modeled and can
be solved using the concepts of quadratic functions.

To understand how the concepts of quadratic functions can be used to solve number
problems, geometry problems, free falling bodies, profit and revenue, study the following
illustrative examples.

Illustrative Example 1: Number Problem

Find two real numbers whose sum is 14 and whose product is a maximum.

Solution:
Let x be the number. Then 14 - x is the other number.
If the product of the two numbers is a maximum, then its equivalent quadratic
function f(x) = x(14 - x)
= 14x – x2
= - x2 + 14x and attains its maximum value at its vertex (h, k)

Where,

( )
h=7

Since h = 7, then the first number is 7 and the other number is 14 – x = 7.

Illustrative Example 2: Geometry

What are the dimensions of the largest rectangular field that can be enclosed by 60m
of fencing wire?

Solution:

Let l and w be the length and width of a rectangle respectively. w

Then, the perimeter P of a rectangle is P = 2l + 2w.

l = 30 -w

18
Since P = 60m, then we have
2l +2w = 60
l +w = 30
l = 30-w Expressing the length as a function of w

Substituting in the formula for the area A of a rectangle

A(w) = lw
A(w) = (30-w)w
A(w) = 30 –w2
A(w) = -w2 +30w

By completing the square,

A(w) = -(w2-30w+225) +225
A(w) = -(w-15)2 + 225

The vertex of the graph of the function A(w) is (15, 225). This point indicates the
maximum value of 225 for A(w) that occurs when w =15. If the width is 15m, then the
length is 30 - w = 30 -15=15m.

Alternative Solution:
The graph of the quadratic function is a parabola. Use the abscissa of the vertex of
the parabola,

Since the area is a function of w, we have

= ( )
= 15

Substituting this to A(w) = -w2 + 30w

= -152 + 30(15)
= -225 + 450
= 225

Therefore, the length should be 15m and the width should be 15m. The rectangle
that gives the maximum area is a square with an area of 225m 2.

Illustrative Example 3: Free Falling Bodies

A ball is thrown vertically upward with a velocity of 40m/sec. The height S(t) of the
ball above the building after t seconds is given by the function S(t) = 40t - 5t2 .
a. How long will it take the object to reach the maximum height?
b. What maximum height will the object reach?
c. Find the time at which the object is on the ground.

Solution:

a. The time for an object to reach the maximum height is the abscissa of the vertex
of the parabola or the value of h.
S(t) = 40t - 5t2

19
If we transform the function into the form y = a(x - h)2 + k
S(t) = -5t2 + 40t
= -5(t2 - 8t +16) + 80
= -5(t - 4)2 + 80
Since the value of h is 4, then the object is at its maximum height after 4 seconds

Alternative Solution:
By using the abscissa of the vertex of the parabola or the value of h,

( )
h=4
Thus, the object is at its maximum height after 4 seconds.

b. The maximum height reached by the object is the ordinate of the vertex of the
function.

From solution a, the vertex of the function S(t) = -5(t - 4)2 + 80 is the point (4,80),
where the maximum value occurs, thus the maximum height reached by an object is
80.

Alternative Solution:
Substitute the value of h = 4 or the abscissa to the given function.
S(t) = 40t - 5t2
= 40(4) – 5 (4)2
= 160 - 80
= 80

c. To find the time it will take the object to hit the ground, S(t) = 0.

At ground level, the value of S(t) = 0. Thus the quadratic equation is

S(t) = 40t - 5t2

0 = 40t – 5t2
0 = 5t(8 - t)
5t = 0 or 8 – t = 0
t=0 t=8
Since t represents the time in seconds and t ≠ 0.

Thus, the object will hit the ground 8 seconds after launch.

Illustrative Example 4: Revenue Problem

A quadratic function can be applied in business/industry to determine the maximum

profit, the break-even situation, and the like.
Suppose x denotes the number of units a company plans to produce or sell. The
revenue function R(x) = (number of units produced or sold) x (price per unit)

20
Study the example below.

A store sells about 40 caps per week at a price of Php100 each. For each Php10
decrease in price, the sales lady found out that 5 more caps per week were sold. Write a
quadratic function in standard form that models the revenue from the sales.
What price produces the maximum revenue?

Solution:

Let x be the number of additional number of caps sold.

You know that Revenue R(x) = (number of caps sold) x (price per cap)
Thus, R(x) = (40 + 5x) (100 - 10x)
R(X) = 4000 – 400x + 500x – 50x2
R(x) = -50x2 + 100x + 4000, model of the revenue from the sales

In order to find the price that produces a maximum revenue, we can transform the
function into the form y = a(x - h)2 + k
R(x) = -50(x -1)2 + 4050

The vertex is (1, 4050).

Thus, the maximum revenue is Php4,050.

The price of the cap to produce maximum revenue can be determined by

P(x) = 100 – 10x
P(x) = 100 - 10(1) = 90

Thus, Php90 is the price of the cap that produces maximum revenue.
