Introductory Message

For the Facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 9 Self-Learning Module on Solving

Problems Involving Angle of Depression!

This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and

reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the self-learning module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this self-
learning module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing
them to manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and
assist the learners as they do the tasks included in the self-learning module.
For the Learner:

Welcome to the Mathematics Grade 9 Self-Learning Module on Solving

Problems Involving Angle of Depression!

This self-learning module was designed to provide you with fun and
meaningful opportunities for guided and independent learning at your own pace and
time. You will be enabled to process the contents of the learning material while being
an active learner.

RECAP
Direction: Solve the following.
1. A balloon is seen by two observers in the sky. The first observer said that the
balloon is overhead and the second observer said that the angle of elevation
of the balloon from him is 66o22’. How high is the balloon from the first
observer if the observers are 6 meters apart?
2. A kite is seen flying up in the sky. The first observer that the kite is just
overhead and the second observer said that he used 800 meters of string to
fly the kite. What is the angle of elevation of the second observer to the kite if
the observers are 7 meters apart?

LESSON

In the previous self-learning module, you have learned how to solve problems
involving angles of elevation. Now, in this self-learning module, we are going to apply
in real-life situations how to solve problems involving the Angle of Depression.
Examples: Solve the following.

1. An observer lying on the top of a hill in Binangonan, Rizal is overlooking the view
of Laguna Lake. Suppose that the hill is 25 meters high, and the angle of depression
of the observer to the lakeshore is 64o11’, what is the distance of the lakeshore to the
foot of the hill?

2. A cat is seen looking at the window of a building. As the cat looks downward, it
saw a garbage can outside. If the window where the cat is seen is 6 meters above the
ground and the garbage can is 2 meters away from the base of the building, what is
the angle of depression of the cat to the garbage can?

2: KEEP PRACTICING!
Directions: Solve each right triangle. Given that ∠C = 90o , give the lengths of the sides
to two decimal places and the angles in degrees and minutes.

1. A = 35o 43′ , a = 7.45, find b and c

2. b = 143, c = 352, find A and B

ACTIVITY 3: TEST YOURSELF!

Direction: Solve the following problems.
1. From the top of a tower which is 175 ft. tall, the angle of depression to a house
is 13o. How far is the house from the tower?
2. From the top of a 115 ft. high lighthouse, the angle of depression of a boat on
the sea 10o15’. What is the distance of the boat from the base of the
lighthouse?
3. From the top of the cliff 350 ft. high, the angle of depression of a boat on the
sea is 15o. How far is the boat from the base of the cliff?
4. An observer is standing in an overlooking view of Antipolo City. He saw the
Sta. Lucia East Grand Mall in Cainta, Rizal. Suppose that the height of the
overlooking is 24 km and the horizontal distance of the mall to the observer is
50 km, what is the angle of depression of the observer?
5. A passenger on a plane saw an island below him. If the altitude of the plane
2500 meters above the surface and the horizontal distance of the plane to the
island is 1796 meters away, what is the angle of depression of the passenger
to the island?

WRAP-UP

We use angle of depression in solving real-life problems if the observer is

standing at height and the object is kept below the line of sight of the observer. We
can define it as if the object is kept below the eye level of the observer.
