END OF MODULE ASSESSMENT (EMA)

I. Determine the truth value of the following.

1. China is in Europe or 3+2=6.
 p :Chinais∈ Europe . (The truth value is False)
q :3+ 2=6 (The truth value is False)
Since none of the two simple statements is true, then we can say that p ∨q has a truth
value of FALSE.

2. Ice floats in water and 2+2=4.

 p : Ice floats∈water . (The truth value is True)
q :2+2=4 (The truth value is True)
Since both p and q have truth value of true, then we can say that p ∧q has a truth value of
TRUE.

3. Ice floats in water or 2+2=4.

 p : Ice floats∈water . (The truth value is True)
q :2+2=4 (The truth value is True)
Since both the statements have truth value of true, then we can say that p ∨q has a truth
value of TRUE.

4. China is in Europe and 3+2=6.

 p :Chinais∈ Europe . (The truth value is False)
q :3+ 2=6 (The truth value is False)
Since both p and q have truth value of false, then we can say that p ∧q has a truth value
of FALSE.

II. Suppose 𝑝 and 𝑞 are TRUE statements, while 𝑟 is a FALSE statement (meaning p is true, q is
true, and r is false). Determine the truth value of
5. ~𝑞 ∨ 𝑟
The truth value is TRUE.
6. ~ (𝑟 ∧ 𝑞)
Since the truth value of (𝑟 ∧ 𝑞) is FALSE, then the truth value of ~ (𝑟 ∧ 𝑞) is TRUE.

7. (𝑝 ∧ ~𝑟) ∨ 𝑞
Since the truth value of (𝑝 ∧ ~𝑟) is TRUE, then the truth value of (𝑝 ∧ ~𝑟) ∨ 𝑞 is also
TRUE.
Note: Find first the truth value of the statements inside the parenthesis.

III. Write the negation and the following quantified statements.

8. Some shoes are the same.
 All shoes are not the same.
9. There exists one student with blonde hair.
 All students do not have blonde hair.
10. All animals move.
 Some animals do not move

LOOKING AHEAD

Consider the ff. simple statements:

𝑝: Today is Sunday.
𝑞: I am going to market.
𝑟: It is sunny day.
𝑠: I will not study.

Translate the ff. symbolic form to English sentence based on the simple statements above.
1. 𝑝 ∧ 𝑞 – Today is Sunday and I am going to market.
2. ∼ 𝑞 ∧ 𝑟 – I am not going to market and it is sunny day.
3. ∼ 𝑠 ∨ 𝑟 – I will study, or it is sunny day.
4. ∼ 𝑝 ∧ ∼ 𝑞 – Today is not Sunday and I am not going to market.
5. 𝑠 ∨ 𝑞 – I will not study, or I am going to market.
