Building Assessment Competence: Session 2

Assessment Planning

Key Understandings:
• Planning for assessment is important in improving the teaching-learning process.
This is achieved by laying out the lesson and assessment activities based on these
factors: curriculum standards, curriculum connections, progression of learning,
timing, and context and resources.
• The assessment process involves planning for assessment, doing formative and
summative assessments, and evaluating.
o Formative assessment involves a cycle of collecting evidence, interpreting
evidence, and using evidence to improve the teaching-learning process.
o Summative assessment involves the process of collecting evidence,
interpreting evidence, and using evidence for grading and reporting.
• Teachers should plan how assessment data can be used for giving feedback,
informing teaching decisions, planning for the next steps, and reporting progress.

Highlights:
Importance of Assessment Planning
• Improves the teaching-learning process
• Lays out the learning goals based on the curriculum, context and needs of learners,
and available resources
• Guides the teacher in assessing progress of learners
Factors to Consider in Planning Assessments
• Curriculum standards
• Curriculum connections
• Progression of learning
• Timing
• Context and resources
Guide Questions in Planning Assessment
• What is your purpose of doing the assessment?
• What competencies do you wish to assess?
• Which strategy would best give learners the opportunity to demonstrate what they
have learned?
• Which strategy would best give learners the opportunity to demonstrate what they
have learned?
• Which strategy would most likely gather evidence of learners’ progress given the
time allotment?
• Will the assessments be given per student or in groups?
• Which strategy would work best in eliciting information from learners?
• What resources are available to both learners and teachers?
• What kind of data will be useful for giving feedback, informing teaching decisions,
planning for the next steps, and reporting progress?

Summary
• Assessment planning lays out both instructional and assessment strategies in long,
medium, and short cycles with focus on the improvement of the teaching-learning
process.
• Assessment activities should give meaningful learning opportunities for learners and
a chance to show their capabilities towards the learning goals and objectives.
• Important decisions in assessment planning shall be made by looking at factors such
as the curriculum standards, curriculum connections, progression of learning, timing,
and context and resources.
• Teachers should plan how assessment data can be used for giving feedback,
informing teaching decisions, planning for the next steps, and reporting progress.
