6000 PREDYNASTIC
PERIOD
BCE (6000 BCE - 3150 BCE)

This is where art developed.

The Predynastic Period in Ancient
Egypt is the time before recorded
history from the Paleolithic to the
Neolithic Age

3150 EARLY DYNASTIC

PERIOD
BCE (3150 BCE - 2613 BCE)

Artwork becomes more elaborate.

During this period the divine rule of the kings began
and a recognizable Egyptian culture, including the
development of writing, arts, and sciences developed.
The Narmer Palette is created, a high point in
Egyptian art of the period.
During 2670 BCE, Imhotep creates King Djoser's Step
Pyramid and Puramid Complex at Saqqara, Egypt.

2613 OLD KINGDOM

(2613 BCE - 2181 BCE)
BCE
Art becomes standardized by the King.
2500 BCE, Egyptians invent the technique of
filigree in the manufacture of gold objects.

2181 FIRST INTERMEDIATE

PERIOD
BCE (2181 BCE - 2040 BCE)

Art is mass-produced.
It was a moment of transition for Egypt, and once that
transition was adopted into the culture.
The absence of reliable records, particularly for the 7th
and 8th Dynasties, adds to the era's image as a "dark age,"
as does the quality of the art and architecture produced.

2040 M I D D L E K I N G D O M
(2040 BCE - 1782 BCE)
BCE
Art reaches its greatest height.
Considered as ancient Egypt's Classical Age during which it produced
some of its greatest works of art and literature.
The 12th Dynasty is often cited as the beginning because of the vast
improvement in the quality of art and architecture.

1782 SECOND INTERMEDIATE

PERIOD
BCE (1782 BCE - 1570 BCE)

Art is influenced by the Hyksos and Nubians.

The quality of the arts also seems to have suffered. Still, the
culture endured, developed, and moved forward.
Literature was still written and religious rites observed. The
Second Intermediate Period, although not as well
documented as the Middle Kingdom or the New Kingdom,
was far from a dark age.

The artwork of the Third Intermediate Period of Egypt

tries to carry on New Kingdom standards with varying
levels of success.
Egyptian mortuary rites, which resulted in some of the
most impressive works of art for upper class and
royal tombs, continued to be observed.
Artwork of striking detail and innovation, especially in
bronze, faience, silver, and gold, was produced during
this time as well as intricate inscriptions, paintings,
and statuary.

525 LATE PERIOD

(525 BCE - 332 BCE)
BCE
Art of the Late Period of Ancient Egypt is influenced
by Persian and Kushite rule. took inspiration from
earlier eras such as the Old Kingdom and the
Middle Kingdom of Egypt, but the artists were
allowed freer expression. More realistic statuary
was created and fine work was done in metals, gold,
silver, and bronze.
Egyptian architecture of the Late Period
purposefully recalled Egypt's great past, and as in
the First Intermediate Period of Egypt, allowed for
individual expression of the artist and the particular
region instead of a state-mandated vision of a work.

PTOLEMAIC PERIOD
323
(323 BCE - 30 BCE)
BCE
Egyptian art fuses with Greek styles during
the Ptolemaic Dynasty.

30 ROMAN EGYPT
(30 BCE - 646 CE)
BCE
Egyptian art combines with Roman in Roman Egypt.

EGYPTIAN
All civilization in old era tried to resemble the
Egyptian civilization. That's because the
Egyptian civilization was the strongest
civilization and the most powerful one. Many
drawing from greek showed that greek tried
to resemble the Egyptian art. Also that
happen in Nubia.

Ancient Egyptian art was not meant to be realistic - it was meant

to be representative of the Ka (spirit) or meaning behind the
image. That’s why their forms/styles don’t drastically progress
over time. Not because they couldn’t paint realism, not what it
was about.

Ancient Egyptians were all about duality, and

their art working in abstract ways was meant to Symbolic meaning and artistic

In most Egyptian art of that era, eyes are shown looking

towards the viewer instead of other characters/situation in
the picture. The face almost always look sideways, body
frontal and legs sideways again. Probably it was their style.
Simple and stylish. Not trivial. They were great story tellers

Paleolithic Art
OLD STONE AGE

Paleolithic art had a refinement and aesthetic sensibility

most people don't expect from stone age people. These
humans were a lot more sophisticated than we give them
credit for. People during this era made small carvings out
of bone, horn, or stone. A wonderful era of art history
that often gets skipped over because many consider it to
fit in with other disciplines not art.

BACK THEN
People were making art before they figure out how to
feed themselves through agriculture. Making beautiful
art is inherit to our species. They incorporated rock
into a shape.

There have been sculptures from the upper Paleolithic

era that shows some of the first signs that humans were
capable of higher level thinking.

Paleolithic artists were capturing what they saw in motion

from nature. Fascinating to see how there's always been an
interest with showing moving life in art.

his period was marked by the rise of Homo sapiens and

their ever-developing ability to create tools and weapons.
Palaeolithic peoples are thought to have attempted to
gain some type of control over their surroundings,
whether through magic or ritual.

FUN FACT:
There's a theory about the reason why they made multiple
paintings on top of each other is because they actually also
serve as animations of sorts. It has been found to have
actually potentially been a movie when firelight flickers
under it, the light will bounce on the walls in a way that the
figures will look like they're running and moving.

Food (hunting scenes, animal sculptures) or fertility

were themes in Paleolithic art (Venus figurines). Its
main focus was on animals.
Art from this period represents a giant leap in human
cognition: abstract thinking.

I know we can never find the true purpose of

paleolithic art, most evidence pointing towards rituals
or a way of communicating. but a part of me likes the
acknowledge it was a way to understand the beauty in
their surroundings and create a presence.
