Romantic Period (1800-1900)
Directions:
Students will create a person who might have lived during the Romantic Period.
Students will write three days of journal entries in the life of this imaginary Romantic
Period person they have created. Students will reveal in the journal the name, class,
gender, occupation, and personality they have created for their person.
The Romantic Period person the student creates will attend a concert of solo voice
with piano accompaniment music at a friend’s house, attend the funeral of another
friend’s child, attend the performance of a ballet, and encounter a live performance of
a Christmas carol over the course of three days’ time using all four of the Music
Literacy List V pieces listed below.
Students are required to incorporate into their descriptions and discussions relevant
information about the Romantic Period from the class lectures and class Powerpoints.
Only information from class lectures and the class Powerpoint is acceptable. As with
all Listening Log assignments, this is an individual assignment to be completed by
each student on their own.
The minimum length for each journal entry is 8 complete sentences (24 sentences
total). All sentences are required to follow academic writing style, grammar,
capitalization and spelling rules, so be sure to check your work. Please note that filler
sentences, exclamations and similar will not be counted towards the total required
length.

Journal Day 1
Long ago, were kings and knights exited this young man named, Johnny Ray his gender was a
male with an occupation in teaching also his personality was cheerful, alert, creative, and
brave. This young man walked throughout the kingdom because his friend Juan invited him.
Many, people were on the floor sad and grieving about this monster named the Elf-King. In
Johnny’s mind, he can remember as any child his mother talking about the Elf-King taking a
child’s soul weak in an Austrian folktale. He arrived at the house knocking on the door his
friend answered the door by opening it and letting Johnny in the house. In close observation,
Johnny saw a piano in the living room with an old wooden chair. His friend closed the door
while he was closing it, Johnny, sit down on a chair in the living room. Juan got on the piano
and said, * I will be playing the piece Erlköning by Franz." While Juan was, playing he only
used the piano, and his voice to tell the story of “The Elf-King." Each time, Juan played a note
on the piano he turns more into a monster looking similar to the Elf-King. Suddenly Johnny
was terrified of how Juan was turning into running out of the house.
