UNDERSTAND
Topic: INTERPRET AN OBJECT OR COMPONENT TO BE MEASURED ACCORDING TO THE
APPROPRIATE REGULAR GEOMETRIC SHAPES
Have you ever wondered how artists create art? Once they have chosen a subject matter, gathered
their supplies, and picked up a paintbrush for the first time - what happens next? Sometimes starting
with a simple square - or other geometric shape - is the answer.
There are two types of shapes the regular and irregular shapes.
What are regular and irregular shapes?
Regular Shapes Irregular Shapes
is that all the sides are equal, and all the does not have equal sides or equal angles.
inside angles are equal.

Geometric Shapes can be defined as figure or area closed by a boundary which is created by
combining the specific number of curves, points, and lines. There are many basic geometric shapes. A
representative sample of the most common geometric shapes used in this lesson are shown below
and identified along with the typical characteristics.
Square
A square is a four-sided figure which is created by connecting
4 line segments. The line segments in the square are all of the
equal lengths and they come together to form 4 right angles.
Circle
A circle which is another shape of geometry has no straight lines.
It is rather a combination of curves that are all connected. In a
circle, there are no angles to be found.
Rectangle
Similar to a square, a rectangle is also created by connecting
four-line segments. However, there are two line segments which
are longer than the other two line segments.
Triangle
Triangle comprises three connected line segments. The angles
can be of distinct measurements. They are not always the right
angles.
Polygon
Another in the geometric shapes that you need to know about is
a polygon. A polygon is made up of only lines and has no curves.
It may not have any open parts. As you can see on the picture,
these are the types of polygon.

Parallelogram
A parallelogram is another in the geometric shapes in which the
opposite side of the shape are parallel.

Trapezoid
Four-sided figure with just one or two pair of parallel sides

Oval
A stretched out circle where the radius is shorter on one axis
than the other

Below are the steps how to draw basic geometric shapes using measuring tool for an accurate
measurement.
A. Steps to draw circle with a compass:
1. Adjust the compass to the
intended radius length.
2. Using one hand, place weight on
the point of the compass, and let
the pencil-end be relatively loose.
3. Angle the compass relative to the
paper; holding the compass
perpendicular to the paper makes
it difficult to maneuver.
What makes using the compass difficult?
1. keeping weight on the point while
drawing with the pencil,
2. dealing with a pencil coming loose and falling out, and
3. making a hole in the paper with the point.

B. Steps on how to measure angle with a protractor:

1. Place the midpoint of the protractor on the
VERTEX of the angle.
2. Line up one of the angles with the zero line of
the protractor (where you see the number 0).
3. Read the degrees where the other side crosses
the number scale.

Let’s Do This!

(Answer this on the CapsLET Assessment Sheet)

SAQ-1: Why does geometric shapes are important in technical drafting?

SAQ-2: Is Circle a polygon? Why?

SAQ-2: Which among the geometric shapes is easy for you to measure and draw? Why?
Let’s Practice!

(Answer on the Answer Sheet provided for Activity and Assessment.)

A. Direction: Read and understand the statement carefully and choose the letter that best describes
the statement inside the box. Write your answer on the CapSLET assessment sheet.

A. Rectangle B. Polygon C. Circle

D. Triangle E. Oval F. Square

_____1. A four-sided figure which is created by connecting 4 line segments

_____2. Another shape of geometry has no straight lines.

_____3. This shape created by connecting four-line segments, however, there are two line segments
which are longer than the other two line segments

_____ 4. This comprises three connected line segments

_____ 5. It is made up of only lines and has no curves. It may not have any open parts.

B. Direction: Classify the tools used in each geometric shapes and choose only the tools inside the
box.

1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

REMEMBER
-
Key Points - In using a compass, the point where the needle sits represents the
center of the circle and its radius can be adjusted by widening or
narrowing the two arms of the compass.
- Some shape names are much easier to remember than others. Most of these
shapes are named based on the number of sides it has. For example, octagon has eight
sides, oct is eight (like an octopus which has eight tentacles).
- The constructions of geometric shapes will be excellent practice in the use of instruments.
Remember that the results you obtain will be only as accurate as your skill makes them. Take
care in measuring and drawing so that your drawings will be accurate and professional in
appearance.
TRY
Let’s see how much have you learned today!

(Answer on the Learner’s Activity and Assessment sheets.)

Direction: Draw what is asked below in each number.

1. Use your ruler to draw three segements of the following lengths:

4 cm, 7.2 cm and 12.8 cm. Label each segement with its measurement

2. Draw complementary angles so that one anlge is 35 o. Label each angle with its measurement.
