IMPORTANT: Do not write anything on this material. Write your answers on the learner’s activity and
assessment sheets provided separately.

UNDERSTAND
Topic: IDENTIFY MEASURING TOOLS BASED ON THE APPROPRIATE OBJECT TO BE
MEASURED
You have learned in the previous lesson the different tools used in technical drafting. Now I
will introduce to you the different tools or instruments that is used in measuring an
appropriate object to be measured. Example object that we need to be measured in
technical drafting are straight lines, accurate scale, arcs, ellipses, and even different
shapes. What is measuring tools?
Measuring tools are used for the purpose of measuring dimensions, implementing any work
with precision. The measuring tools are also used largely for carrying out different types of
measurements. The inspection or examination operation include checking or testing an object based
on the required dimensions given on a diagram or a sketch. Measurements must be accurate.

Different Measuring Tools Based on The Object to Be Measured

Ruler is the most common popular type of measuring tool.

It is usually 6 or 12 inches in length. Used for marking out
distances as well as for measuring purposes. Measures
straight lines

T-Square is usually transparent edge made of plastic which

should be free of nicks and cracks to provide smooth and
straight lines. It can measure lines up to 48” long.

Triangles are used to measures for drawing vertical and

oblique lines. The most common used triangles are the 45 o
and the 30o x 60 o.
Protractor is used for measuring and setting of angles other than those obtainable with the triangles.

Triangular Scale is used to measure scale object in general drawing. Its main
purpose is to reproduce the dimension in full size, reduce size, and enlarge size
for some regular proportion on a drawing.

Let’s Do This!
(Answer this on the CapsLET Assessment Sheet)

SAQ-2: Among the measuring tools, what tool is familiar to you? Have you already used it?
Where do you use it?
SAQ-2: Why do you need to use this measuring tool?

Let’s Practice!

(Answer on the Answer Sheet provided for Activity and Assessment.)

I. Direction: Match the description in Column A with measuring tools in Column B. Write only the
letter of the correct answer on a separate sheet of paper.

COLUMN A COLUMN B
_____1. It is the measuring tool used for measuring and setting of angles. a.
_____2. It is the most popular type of measuring tools, usually 6 or 12 inches A. Triangle
in length. B. Tape Ruler
_____3. Its main purpose is to produce, reduce or enlarge the dimension of C. Protractor
size on a drawing. D. Scale
_____4. It is used for drawing vertical and oblique lines. E. Ruler
_____5. It provides an easy means for accurately measuring curved surfaces. F. Divider

II. Direction: Name the different measuring tools shown below. Use a separate sheet for your answer.

REMEMBER
Key Points To make your object to be accurate, you used an appropriated
measuring too for your drawing. You need to consider the following
reminders in using this measuring tools.
1. Do not use -square on an uneven or rough surfaces and uneven cut paper along its
working edge.
2. Always fasten larger backing sheet of thicker drawing paper on the board first.
3. Reverse this step if you are left-handed.

TRY
