 Remember - This section summarizes the concepts and applications of the
lessons.
 Check your Understanding- It will verify how you learned from the lesson.
 Post-test - This will measure how much you have learned from the entire
module.
LESSON 3: PERFORM MENSURATION AND CALCULATION

EXPECTATION:
 Measuring instrument are identified
 Units of the common systems of measurement are tackled.
 Value of the lines in measuring instruments is given emphasis.
 Conversion of measurements will be performed.

TOPIC: Mensuration and Calculation

BRIEF INTRODUCTION

In drawing measuring is very important, especially when you are drawing a plan.
Your output will depend on the measurement that you did. To gain an accurate result, measuring
instrument must be the first one you should be familiar to. They have different uses, values and
units which are included in this lesson. Some common units that we used to convert every time
we do measurement are also mentioned in this lesson.

LO1. Select Measuring instrument

OBJECTIVES:
1. Define 1 foot ruler and protractor
2. Measure lines and angles properly
3. Observe the end point of the line that you are measuring.

LEARNING CONTENT:

1. 1 foot ruler – measuring instrument that measures only 1 foot or 12 inches long.
It is used to measure short distance. Commonly it consists of three units of
measurement; inches, centimeter and millimeter.

What are the values of each line in our ruler?

Inches – in is the abbreviation and a unit of length with the symbol like in or “.
2. https://www.quora.com/Where-is-07-inches-on-a-ruler

Centimeter – cm is the abbreviation and a unit of length in the metric system, with the
value of .1 of each scale

Millimeter – mm is the abbreviation and a unit of length in the metric system, with the
value of 1 of each scale

2. Protractor

Protractor is a measuring instrument in drawing that measure angles. The unit used in
the value of angles is degrees ( ). The purpose of an angle in a drawing is to determine the
shape of the triangle. We have three kinds of triangle, like; equilateral, triangle with 3 equal
angles, isosceles triangle have two the same angles and scalene triangle has no equal angles.
To find out the value of each scale in protractor is very easy, because it is guided with
numbered scale.

Example exercises: Using your protractor, locate and check the given measurement
of the angles drawn below.

ACTIVITY

In the illustration below, measure the straight lines using the 3 units in your 1 foot ruler as asked
and the angles that has an arrow. Write your answer on the given lines in the respective
numbers

1. _____mm 2. _____

3. _____in
4.___

5.____

6.______cm

10____cm
7.______in

8._____mm 9._____in

REMEMBER:
Always think of the following before doing any measurement:
1. Make sure that your measuring instrument has clear scales.
2. Make sure that you have your guide on the values of each scale.
3. Always start at the 0 scale.
4. Check the right scale in your instrument if you are using the proper
side of the required unit.

CHECKING YOUR UNDERSTANDING

Draw a bench inside the box with the following measurement:

Length - 4inches
Width - 2.5 cm
Height - 30 mm (leg of a bench)

POST TEST

I. Identification.
A. Identify the respective value of the scale in the ruler where the arrow is pointing at. Write
your answer in the line provided.
