Task 1b and 1c. What should I do? Tandem (8th – 12th November)
Study Part 2 of Healthy living before you do the tasks below. Make sure to complete the
exercises 01.02.04, 01.03.05, 02.01.04 and 02.01.05 from the online “Healthy Living” unit,
where you will practice the pronunciation of useful words for the task. Healthy living
In task 2, you and your partner are going to do a speaking activity in Tandem. Please follow
these instructions carefully because you will need TANDEM (available in your classroom) to see
the task(s) you need to complete.
This activity is a role play where one person pretends to have a health problem and the other
person pretends to be his/her new family doctor. Then, exchange roles. Bear in mind that you
must not invent the health problems as you will find them in Tandem. Make sure you read
the instructions you will find in Tandem very carefully.
Task 1b
Task 1b takes place before the conversation.
1. Email your partner to decide when you are going to meet. Also decide who is going to
invite who in Tandem
2. Prepare for the Tandem task
• Review the useful language below for describing problems, giving advice and
agreeing and disagreeing and prepare to use it while speaking.
• Think of additional information and vocabulary you might need to give and receive
advice on health problems.

Task 1c
Task 1c is the speaking task with your partner. Do the Tandem task called CA6 Healthy Living.
You must do the task only once and you must not prepare your conversation beforehand.
The aim of using Tandem is that you improvise and spontaneously use your English (it doesn’t
have to be perfect, don’t worry; short and spontaneous is much better than long and artificial).
Conversations that sound as if they were prepared (scripted, pre-written) will be
penalised. Intonation that does not sound natural will also be penalised.
Your teacher will post the instructions for an assessed reading quiz (compulsory). Make
sure you do it as it counts as a 10% of your total CA grade.

Optional Speaking Task (8th November – 12th November)
The extra speaking task is a TANDEM activity. Read the instructions in this document to know
how Tandem works: Tandem Task Instructions_Students.
Your teacher will post further details about it on the Notice Board.
1. Find a partner. You and your partner must be available at the same time and day. You
should use the ‘Conversation Club’ folder in the Forum in order to look for a partner.
4. Remember that the Tandem tool will open 2 tabs in your browser: A Tandem session
that will show the Tandem task information and a Videochat session that will video
record the conversation with your partner.
5. Once you and your partner reach the end of the Tandem task, check the solution and
click ‘Click to finish’. Then, click ‘Click here to close the Videochat session’.
6. Your conversation will be recorded automatically and your teacher will have direct
access to it. Post a message on the ‘Conversation Club’ folder letting your teacher
know that you have completed this task.
