In task 2, you and your partner are going to do a speaking activity in Tandem. Please follow
these instructions carefully because you will need TANDEM (available in your classroom) to see
the task(s) you need to complete.

This activity is a role play where one person pretends to have a health problem and the other
person pretends to be his/her new family doctor. Then, exchange roles. Bear in mind that you
must not invent the health problems as you will find them in Tandem. Make sure you read
the instructions you will find in Tandem very carefully.

Task 1b
Task 1b takes place before the conversation.
1. Email your partner to decide when you are going to meet. Also decide who is going to
invite who in Tandem
2. Prepare for the Tandem task
• Review the useful language below for describing problems, giving advice and
agreeing and disagreeing and prepare to use it while speaking.
• Think of additional information and vocabulary you might need to give and receive
advice on health problems.

Task 1c
Task 1c is the speaking task with your partner. Do the Tandem task called CA6 Healthy Living.

Your conversation should be maximum 6 minutes long.

You must do the task only once and you must not prepare your conversation beforehand.
The aim of using Tandem is that you improvise and spontaneously use your English (it doesn’t
have to be perfect, don’t worry; short and spontaneous is much better than long and artificial).
Conversations that sound as if they were prepared (scripted, pre-written) will be
penalised. Intonation that does not sound natural will also be penalised.
