Safety Equipment on Ships

1. Lifeboat

Lifeboats are used to save people in dangerous situation. Lifeboats in the form of a small boat
are put on the right and left sides of the ship, or rather in the lifeboat deck. On general
freighter there are two lifeboats, while on a passenger ship or cruise line there are more,
depending on the scale of the vessels. Lifeboat average provided around 12 units. Lifeboat is

to other ships

2. Ring Life Buoys

The Ring Life Buoy and Life Jacket: Use to float a person above the water. Life buoys is
shaped like a tire. This buoy will be thrown into the water, if a passenger fell into the sea.
This buoy must have striking colors for easy recognition.

3. Life Jackets

Life jacket is worn like ordinary clothing. This jacket is used for floating on the sea when an
emergency situation occurs. Jackets helper must also have a striking color so it will be
noticed easily. The jacket should be equipped with a whistle attached to ropes to draw the
attention of rescuers.

4. Inflatable Liferaft

Liferaft consists of two types, the first is rigid type and the second rafts are inflatable rafts.
The second type rafts is used if the lifeboats were failed. Life raft must be equipped with a
cover that serves as protection for the passengers. This raft color usually flashy -like the color
orange- so it will be easily noticed.

For the moment the raft which is developed shaped like a capsule with large capacity and
equipped with a long rope. It goes by throwing the Inflatable Liferaft into the sea and then
pulled the rope. When the rope is pulled, the raft will be automatically inflated. Inside, there
is life support equipments such as foods, drinks, and medicines. The raft can carry up to 25
people.

5. Line Throwing Apparatus

Safety Equipment On Ships – Line Throwing Apparatus is used as an innitial connection


between the survivor and rescuers to facilitate approachment, it can also be used for other
purpose necessary. This Line Thrower should be able to throw a rope as far as 230 meters in
minimum.

6. Survival suit and Immersion suit


Used as protection and to prevent the body temperature drops due to the cold sea water.

8. Pyrotechnis (Smoke Signal)

Used as an awareness signal whenever a survivor see a rescue ship. Safety Equipment On
Ships – These gestures can only be seen during the day by using a floating smoke signal
(bouyant smoke signal). At night survivor can use a hand torch (red hand flares) or torch
parachute (parachute signal)
