I. INTRODUCTION:

In an event of Abandonship, all ships crew must have the knowledge to properly use and
operate all the necessary lifesaving appliances.

II. MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY (MELC):

Use life-saving appliances (PMMS12DMSS-Ia2)

Explain the use of survival crafts during ship abandonment (PMMS12DMSS-Ia3)

III. OBJECTIVES:

The learner shall be able to Identify the kinds of life-saving appliances and differentiate
the uses of lifeboat, life craft, and rescue boat.

Types and usages of some life- saving appliances
a. Lifebuoy
b. Lifejacket
c. Immersion suits
d. Thermal protective aids
Uses of survival crafts

i
a. Lifeboat
b. Rescue boat
c. Life craft

C. EXPLAIN/ ELABORATE:

 Lifebuoy - A lifebuoy, ring buoy, lifering, lifesaver, life donut, life preserver or
lifebelt, also known as a "kisby ring" or "perry buoy", is a lifesaving buoy designed
to be thrown to a person in the water, to provide buoyancy and prevent drowning.

 Life Jackets - A personal flotation device (PFD) that is a piece of equipment

designed to assist a wearer to keep afloat in water. The wearer may be either
conscious or unconscious. PFDs are available in different sizes to accommodate
variations in body weight. Designs differ depending on wearing convenience and
level of protection.

 Immersion suit - or survival suit (or more specifically an immersion survival

suit) is a special type of waterproof dry suit that protects the wearer from
hypothermia from immersion in cold water, after abandoning a sinking or capsized
vessel, especially in the open ocean.

 Thermal Protective Aid - A Thermal Protective Aid is an aluminized

polyethylene suit with heat sealed seams that protects from the elements and
prevents hypothermia. It is used for the Man Over Board rescue.

The difference between Lifeboat, Liferaft and Rescue boat

Liferafts in general are collapsible, and stored in a heavy-duty fiberglass canister, and also
contain some high-pressure gas to allow automatic inflation to the operations size. SOLAS
regulations require these to be sealed, never opened by the ship's crew; they are removed at
a set periodically and sent to a certified facility to open and inspect the liferaft and contents.
In contrast, a lifeboat is open, and regulations require a crew member to inspect it periodically
and ensure all required equipment is present. Modern lifeboats have a motor; liferafts usually
do not. Large lifeboats use a davit or launching system (there might be multiple lifeboats on
one), that requires a human to launch. Lifeboat launching takes longer and has higher risk of
failure due to human factors. However, lifeboats do not suffer from inflation system failures as
inflatable liferafts do.
Life boat is a survival craft used for sustaining the lives of person in distress from the time of
abandoning the ship. While rescue boat is to rescue a person in distress (overboard) and to

ii
board the ship. Rescue boat is not used as a survival craft while lifeboat can be used as a
rescue boat, provided that it meets requirements of rescue boat
