Hub reduction gear

Hub reduction gear

If the final reduction and the associated torque

increase are made to occur in close proximity to
the driving wheels, then the other components in
the transmission will be subject to less load.
In an axle with a hub reduction gear the main
reduction takes place in the hub gear itself. The
driving wheels then rotate more slowly than the
half shafts.
Vehicles driven intensively under difficult road
conditions can be equipped with a hub reduction
gear at the driving wheels.

Hub reduction gear

The hub reduction gear is a planetary gear

comprising an internal ring gear, a sun wheel,
several planet wheels and a planet wheel carrier.
In the new hub reduction gears, the planet wheel
carrier is incorporated into the hub cover.

part. incorporated into the hub cover.

Hub reduction gear

The half shaft drives the sun wheel of the hub

reduction gear. A driver locks the internal ring
gear into the rear axle housing. The sun wheel
drives the planet wheels which roll against the
fixed ring wheel. The planet wheels make the
planet wheel carrier rotate. The planet wheel
carrier is connected to the wheel hub via the hub
cover. This results in a reduction of the wheel
speed.

Lubrication

Lubrication

General
When the vehicle is driven at low speed, the oil
lies in the hub reduction gear and forms an oil
pool. The rotation of the hub reduction gear in
the oil pool lubricates the planet wheels, sun
wheel and hub bearings.

When the vehicle is driven at high speed, the oil

is transferred along the edge of the hub cover
because of the rotation. The planet wheels still
rotate in the oil. The sun wheel is lubricated via
oil spray from the planet wheels. An oil
collector collects the oil and carries the oil to the
hub bearings.

Lubrication

Old hub reduction gear

In the old hub reduction gears, the oil circulates
only in the hub reduction gear. Each hub
reduction gear is bled individually.

New hub reduction gear
In the new hub reduction gears, the oil circulates
between the central gear and the hub reduction
gear. The oil collector which conveys the oil to
the hub bearings, also conveys the oil to the
central gear via the rear axle housing. Oil sprays
up from the crown wheel in the central gear
during rotation. The oil collector on the oil pipe
in the central gear collects the oil and
recirculates it to the hub reduction gear.
The oil is cleaned in the central gear oil filter.
Bleeding of the lubrication system is carried out
in the central gear.

Lubrication

At high speed, when the oil is transferred along

the edge of the hub cover, oil leaves the hub
reduction gear at a faster rate than it returns to it.
There is then less oil in the hub reduction gear
which reduces the temperature.

Lubrication

At low speed, a pool of oil is created again and

no oil leaves the hub reduction gear. The oil is
only supplied from the central gear through the
oil pipe. The maximum oil level in the hub
reduction gear is controlled automatically when
the oil rises above the snap ring in the rear axle
housing and runs back to the central gear.

127 257
Because of the common lubrication system, the
oil level varies in the hub reduction gear and
central gear depending on how the vehicle has
been driven before the oil level is checked. Refer
also to the function description for the central
gear in the Workshop manual, main group 8.
