Function
Fire extinguishers apply an agent that will cool
burning heat, smother fuel or remove oxygen
so the fire cannot continue to burn
Life jackets are designed to keep you afloat in water. They
will automatically turn you into a face-up position, keeping
your mouth and nostrils clear of the water to prevent the
risk of drowning.
An immersion suit is a body covering suit that is
worn specifically for the purpose of remaining
afloat and surviving during emergencies in high seas
A lifebuoy is a life-saving buoy designed to be
thrown to a person in water, to provide
buoyancy and prevent drowning
Lifeboats are basically small boats that are kept aboard a ship to
carry out emergency abandonment, in case of mishaps such as
man overboard, ship accidents, etc. occur. They primarily function
as a device for swift and effective evacuation of people in distress
from the ship and then aid them to a safe location. 
• life rafts are small, rigid or inflatable boats for
the emergency evacuation of a vessel. Life raft
availability on large ships and commercial
vessels is subject to international, national and
regional laws. 
A fire hose is a very high pressure hose that is used to take
water to a fire. It may also carry fire retardant materials. Fire
hoses can be attached to either a fire engine or a fire hydrant,
and the pressure is between 800 and 2000 kPa (Kilopascal).
• Eyewash stations/ eye rinse stations are designed to flush the
eye and face area only. There are combination units available
that contain both features: a shower and an eyewash. The
need for emergency showers or eyewash stations is based on
the properties of the chemicals that workers use and the tasks
that they do in the workplace.
A first aid kit is a box, bag or pack that holds supplies used to
treat minor injuries including cuts, scrapes, burns, bruises, and
sprains. More elaborate first aid kits can also include survival
supplies, life-saving emergency supplies or convenience items like
bug sting wipes or cold & flu medicines.

used in firefighting and industry
• Fire alarm system is to detect fires and alert
both building occupants and emergency
personnel from a centrally monitored and
controlled location.
• Distress signals are used to show that you
need help and require immediate assistance.
The signals are internationally recognised and
must only be used if you are in distress.
