SOLUBILITY DIFFERENCES
LABORATORY REPORT
Objectives: To observe and to know the solubility of water and organic solvents
against different substances.

Materials Needed:
Quantity Apparatus Quantity Chemicals
9 Test tube 1 mL Carbon tetrachloride
1 Test tube rack 1 mL 2-Butanol
1 Dropper 1 mL Glacial Acetic Acid
1 Beaker 1 mL Benzoic Acid
1 Graduated Cylinder 1 mL Cooking oil
1 Hot plate Small amount Naphthalene
1 Small amount Styrofoam
Serological Pipette
1 Small amount Sugar
Bulb syringe
1 Small amount NaCl
Spatula
Water
OBSERVATIONS and RESULTS
Question:
1. Which of the organic compound did not dissolve in water but dissolve in
chloroform? Explain why.
Styrofoam did not dissolved in water but it dissolves in chloroform because both
of them is non polar solvent. Styrofoam is made from polystyrene and foam. Due
to their similar polarities, it can dissolve the carbon-hydrogen bonds of
Styrofoam.
