Cohesion is the “structural relationship” seen between clauses and sentences.

The aim of
cohesion is to show unity within the presented text. Cohesion can be achieved through the use of
different cohesive devices.

Cohesive devices, sometimes called linking words, connectors, or transitional words, are
words or phrases that show relationship in a text or paragraph. Cohesive devices make the flow of
the thought of the text smooth and effective and help achieve unity in the text.

COHESION\COHESIVE DEVICE: CONCEPT NOTES

In the Activity 1 of this module, you used conjunctions to connect two clauses to form
a new sentence that is more complex but also more detailed. The cohesive device “BECAUSE”
that you used in the first sentence showed reasoning that supported the first given clause. While
the other cohesive device, which is “OR,” showed a choice between the two things presented in
the given clauses.

These are some of the cohesive devices that you can use in constructing texts:

1. To add an idea to the one already stated

moreover likewise in addition

further furthermore equally important

Example: More talent agencies seek well-talented individuals. Moreover, more and
more aspiring applicants are practicing for the audition.

In addition to the given data about banning the use of single-use plastics,
a new study also shows how effective recycling is in reducing plastic
waste.

2. To contradict or limit something

although still on the contrary

nevertheless at the same time however

Example: Approving the proposed policy will be a progress; however, it can also
affect another existing policy

The project will continue, although there will be a few changes from the
original plan.

3. To show an arrangement of your idea by time and place

first finally presently

meanwhile at this time at length

Example: Before we take the needed materials, first we need to read the rules that
we need to follow.

That is the last step that we should do. Finally, after the experiment, we
will record our findings and observations in our notebooks.

4. To exemplify some idea

for example in other words

Example: The purpose of the author was to inform. For example, the text gives us
information about the planet Mars.

You need to rest for a few months more. In other words, you need to
cancel your upcoming concert.

5. To sum up what you have said

in fact as a result in short

Example: Eating dark chocolate can make you feel relieved or happy. It also gives
the body antioxidants. In fact, these benefits of eating dark chocolate can
make you healthy.

Deforestation decreases the forest area by cutting trees and by urbanizing

these areas. It also makes the area prone to flooding and landslides. In
short, deforestation greatly affects not only the animals but also humans.
