Project description
Students should work in groups to study an existing urban area; applying the main
topics discussed during the lectures.

Aims
Students are required to survey and document an existing urban area, define its
urban problems, and present alternative proposals for solving these urban problems
while defining their development approaches and strategies.

Intended Learning Outcomes

On completion of this module students should be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

Explain building law, property law and their application


Explain the importance of building laws for urban development
Explain different levels of planning and their relative limitations and regulations

Subject-specific cognitive skills

Explain different scopes and scales of building codes and regulations; for both the
urban and building scales
Explain regulations of Land subdivision
Explain initiatives for green neighbourhood development

Subject-specific practical skills

Apply building law to determine building heights and dimensions


Explain building regulations in new cities and existing cities in Egypt
Develop guidelines and assessment tools for green neighbourhood development.

Learning methods
Students shall practice numerous tools for studying urban area and proposing urban
development patterns. This includes analysis using surveying and documentation,
evaluation using the SWOT analysis, and proposing and evaluating proposals.

Survey:
Students should conduct site visit(s) for their identified urban area.
Use Google maps, Photos, questionnaire

1. Use Google maps and photos to analyse the type of urban development
 Identify the location of the urban area (CBD, Inner city, suburbs, new
development or rural fringe).
 Identify the type of urban development (TOD, conservation, infill, sprawl, new
development)
 Identify the type of zoning (single use, multiuse zoning) and whether the ype
of zoning is based on use or form or both.
 Identify housing development patterns (Detached single unit, semi detached
single unit, attached single unit, attached multi unit, apartments)- as well as
type of residential class (High, middle, economic.)
 Identify urban cluster development patterns (linear, loop, tree cluster).

2. Use maps and photos to analyse the following points:


 Identify public property and private property lines.
 Identify proximity to public services (hospitals, education facilities, recreational
areas...etc.), as well as proximity to public means of transportation.
 Road width, pavement width
 Land uses (Ground Floor–Typical Floors)
