Module 4

Practical Research 2
LEARNING OUTCOMES: Athe end of the lesson the learner shall be able to;
 discuss the guidelines in formulating a research title
 design a research use in daily life
 formulate the title of a quantitative research.

TOPIC: Research Title

CORE VALUES:Cooperation and Consideration

INTRODUCTION:

To ensure the success of your research project,you must carefully select a topic in an
area of your interest, or choose one that you are familiar with and you think is worth doing
research on.A research begins with an inquiry in mind ,by identifying a problem he or she
needs to address. For a beginning researcher ,identifying what needs to be researched on is far
more difficult than finding the answers to their queries. Finding a topic to research on is quite
difficult for students.A topic area is a situation that has strong and or diverse impact to society
or to nature.It is preferably currentsuch that situation is considered a trend.

LESSON PROPER:

A. Identifying the Topic Area for Research

Research begins with an inquiry( a question,a problem,or an issue) which leads further to
a discovery (an answer, a solution,or a clarification).In arriving at a discovery the person
must be guided by the standards in the discipline (theories,concepts,principles,models) so
that the research will be valid,scientifically done and acceptable in the field.
B. Generally,the title should;
a. Summarize the main idea of the paper;
b. Be a concise statement of the main topic;
c. Include the major variable/s;
d. Show the relationship of the main variable of the study;
e. Include the main task of the researcher about the major variables of the study;and
f. Mention the participants (in a general manner) and the setting.
g. Set a 10-12 word limit for titles.
C. How to pick a topic
Picking a topic is a daunting task for many students and even established researchers
because it is often difficult to choose a topic in area you are not very familiar about. A
common difficulty is narrowing down a topic or a reserchable problem,as there are a lot
of interesting topic out there.
D. Basic types of sources of selecting topic
a. General (articles,monographs,books and other documents)
b. Primary(journals)
c. Secondary(textbooks)
E. Building Blocks of a Research Title
A research title should contain the following;
 The variables used in the study

 The research design
 The research of focus or problem to be investigated;and
 The respondents/subjects or locus of the study.
Consider the following research titles:
1. The Impact of leadership style to job satisfaction and work performance of
employees in the restaurant service industry
.The title speaks of impact or effect as an argument in the study.There are three
variables involved-leadership style,job satisfaction and work performance.
The respondents of the study are the employees in the restaurant service while the
Designis descriptive -causal since it deals with the effect of leadership style on the
Satisfaction and work performance of the employees.
2. Durian peelings as substitute raw materials for cardboard making
Deals with the effectiveness of durian peelings as a raw materials for cardboard
making 9research focus).The variable in the study refers to substitute raw
materials.Subject of the study refer to the durian peeling and the design is
experimental.

ASSESSMENT:

Listed below are several research titles.Identify the following:

a. Research focus or problem
b. Variables
c. Respondents/subjects
d. Design of the study

1. Sleep behavior and its relationship to academic achievement

a._______________________________________________________________________________
b._______________________________________________________________________________

c.________________________________________________________________________________
d.___ ______________________________
2. Effects ‘global warming awareness. On their waste management behavior
a.________________________________________________________________________________

.c.________________________________________________________________________________
d._______________________________________________________________________________

A research question expresses the researcher’s interest in a problem.It is a must to write a research
title initially. Doing so provides direction for your study. The research title can be revised as your
study develop. The research title is an important part of your paper,as it provides a brief description
of what your study is all about;from the issue to the sample,theory and data analysis. Your titles can
be revised as your projects develops.As such,you have plenty of working research titles until you
decide on the final one.
