Module 3

Practical Research 2

Week 3
1.
LEARNING OUTCOMES: The student shall be able to:
a. Explain the meaning of literature review;
b. Discuss the characteristics, purpose ,functions and sources of literature review and
c. Select a relevant literature review.

TOPIC: Fundamentals of Literature Review

CORE VALUES:Cooperation and Consideration

INTRODUCTION:
Starting out a research project can be one difficult task,as it involves a rigorous
selection of materials relevant to the study. Your task is to establish research gaps that will be
the bases of pursuing your quantitative research. This is to be provided in the literature review
section of your paper. A comprehensive review of related literature must be done first before
conducting the research study. This will help you establish the significance of your research
into the existing body of knowledge.

LESSON PROPER:

A. What is a Literature Review?

A literature review is a comprehensive classification and evaluation of what other

researchers have w.ritten about your topic. It is a process of compiling, classifying and
evaluating what other researchers have written on a certain topic . It can be a partial
component of a research undertaking but it can also stand alone as a self – contained
review of writing on a subject.

B.Characteristics of a good literature:

a. Delimits clearly the subject matter to be reviewed

b. Covers all important relevant literature
c. Is up to date
d. Provides an insightful analysis of the ideas and conclusions in the literature
e. Points out similarities and differences and strenghts and weaknesses in the literature
f. Identifies gaps in the literaturefor future research
g. Clarifies the context for which the literature is important

C.Purposes of Reviewing a Literature

a. It builds the confidence of a researcher as he/she fully understand the variables being
studied.
b. It shows similar studies conducted which,in turn, become the springboard of
discussion as the researcher may agree or disagree with the current results.

c. Fellow researchers will see the objectivity of the study as they read the review of
literature and related sources similar in research or conceptual framework.
d. Reviewing a body of literature on the topic makes the research study empirical.

C.Functions of a review of Related Literature

a. Helps the resarcher identify gaps that surface in the process of review.
b. It provides justification of the proposed project and enable researchers to define the
boundaries of their study
c. Defining what makes the study different from those done by the other researchers
d. It gives the researchers more credibility to interperet the significance of their own
results.
e. It also prevents duplication of previous studies.

D. How to Select Relevant Literature

A literature review is your critical analysis of available resources and not just a summary
of what is available so far about your chosen topics. Careful selection and review of these materials
are therefore significant in establishing what has been pointed out as research gap. You should be able
to identify the best publications in a specific research area so it would be easier for you to locate
relevant and recent literature. It is best for you to find literature which was published in the last five
years., How many materials do you need to review then?
E. Steps in Conducting a Literature Review

1. Choose your topic

2. Identify databases and resources
3. Search and Refine
4. Read and Analyze
5. Write the Review
ASSESSMENT:

1. Discuss briefly the importance of literature review.

2. What are the functions of a Related Literature?
3. Sources of Related Literature
4. What are the steps in conducting a literature review?
5. How to select a relevant literature?
.
. SUMMARY:

The search for related literature plays a vital role in doing a research. Writing a research paper begins
with a thorough review of related literature that is relevant to the chosen research topic.
A literature eview is an account of what has been published by other researchers. A literature must
be well-written as this demonstrates the researcher’s familiarity with the important literature on his or
her chosen topic. A well – written literature review must have an introduction to establish the focus
and significance of your study , a body that summarizes and evaluates the existing knowledge in the
field, and a coclusion that highlights the research gaps that your study intends to fill.
