V: INTRODUCTION:

There are several reasons behind your choice of a particular topic to research on. Your
curiosity or familiarity about an animate creature or inanimate object and its functionality
inspire you to discover more about it. Whatever experience or background knowledge you
about your chosen topics become valuable and believable only with respect to your acts of
proving the validity and truthfulness of your claims about your topic, and if these ideas of
yours are related to what the world or other people already know or have already discovered
or done about your topic.
VI:BODY:

A. Definition of the Literature Review

A literature review is a process of compiling, classifying, and evaluating what other

researchers written on a certain topic. RRL is an important component of research
regardless of the type. Be it qualitative or quantitative research. Traditional is for
qualitative research, systematic is for quantitative research. Systematic review, “a
question-driven methodology”is used by quantitative researchers who bwgin their
research works by asking questions- one big question that states the main problem of the

research and a set of sub-questions that deal with specific aspects of the
research.Qualitative research likewise begins with research questions, but these are open-
ended and subjective questions.

B. Purposes of Reviewing a Literature:

1. To find the connection of your research to the current conditions or situations of the
world.
2. To know more about theories or concepts underlying your research and to learn from
them with respect to your own research study.
3. To discover the relation of your research with previous research studies.
4. To obtain information on the accuracy or relevance of your research questions.
5. To familiarize yourself with technical terms related to your research.

C. Steps in Conducting a Systematic Review

A systematic review of related literature has the following sequential steps:

1. Clarifying the research questions

2. Planning the research based on your understanding of the research questions
3. Searching for literature
4. Listing criteria for considering the values of written works.
5. Evaluating the quality of previous research studies.
6. Summarizing the various forms of knowledge collected.

D. Characteristics of a good literature review

a. Delimits clearly the subject matter to be reviewed

b. Covers all important relevant literature
c. Is up-to-date
d. Provides an insightful analysis of ideas and conclusions of literature
e. Points out similarities and differences, and strengths and weaknesses in the literature
f. Identifies gaps in the literature for future research
g. Clarifies the context which the literature is important.

E. Structure of Literature Review:

a. What are the main ideas and contributions that form the core of literature?
b. Which papers are important and which ones are not?
c. Have there been controversies in the cited studies and how have they been resolved?
d. What are the common assumptions made in the articles?
e. What are the current deficicencies/mistakes and unresolved issues?
f. Are there important connections to other topics?

F. Four types of reading:

1. Elementary reading= This is the basic type of reading. It consists merely of

recognizing the words and the literal comprehension of the sentences.

2. Systematic Skimming = This is a prerequisite to analytical reading which requires
time.
3. Analytic Reading = After selecting the article through systematic skimming the
researcher does the analytical reading. Ample time is required for this.
4. Comparative reading = This is the highest level of reading, in whichnthe researcher
analyzes several articles or books.

G. Conducting the review of literature has three steps:

1. Looking for relevant materials;

2. Actual reading;
3. Note-taking.

VII: SUMMARY/CONCLUSION

Literature review is the process of compiling, classsifying, and evaluating what other

researchers have written on a certain topic.
Two of the many purpose of the literature review are as follows:To find out the
connection of your research to the current conditions or situation of the world To know
more about theories or concepts underlying your research and to learn from them with
respect to your own study.
The steps in preparing a review of related literature include picking a suitable research
topic,selecting the relevant source materials.
There are four types of reading:elementary reading, systematic skimming, analytic reading
and comparative reading.
