Nico Fapoulas, a 48-year-old man, is talking with his health care provider about

symptoms he is experiencing. He states that when he goes for his morning jog, his legs
feel weak and tired. He is having problems with simple tasks that require manual
dexterity such as writing or unlocking doors. Upon examination, the health care
provider observes some atrophy of the muscles of Nico’s legs, forearms, and hands. He
also notes that Nico is having a slight problem with his speech.
Undeniably, as people gets older, they are prone and inclined to certain
syndromes and diseases. Nico Fapoulas is one of the concrete exemplars of the said
situation. According to statistics, it cannot be repudiated that older adults are more
uncovered with diseases and disorders for the reason that when people get hold of
being an adult, their immune system malfunctions and flawed and as result, it
inculcates failures in the holistic being as it does not act as vigorously as compared to
the younger generation. With this actual happening, there is a decline in the activity of
the immune system – the immune system tends to act and respond slower and
produces outcomes of being susceptible in getting ill and acquiring disorders.
Upon having an in-dept examination and observation concerning Mr. Fapoulas’
case, the condition he is subjected to is fairly linked and correlated with muscular
system because of the symptoms he possesses like – having a difficulty in simple
activities such as jogging, writing and even unlocking entrances. In addition, his
healthcare provider has observed pragmatic conditions regarding atrophy and with his
minimal difficulty in his speech. The clear and distinct definition of atrophy is the
decrease in size of a tissue, cell and just as body part.
With the given information and data, the disorder that Mr. Nico Fapoulas
undergoes is Myasthenia Gravis. Unknowingly, this condition is not generally known
for the ground that it is rare. In accordance with the research done by medical
professionals, this is a peculiar disorder of the neuromuscular transmission [ CITATION
Ame17 \l 1033 ]. An autoimmune neuromuscular disorder in which there is an existence of
muscular weakness and emanates abnormal fatigue of the skeletal muscles of a person
just like the case of Mr. Fapuolas.
Whenever a person who is diagnosed with this disorder, as he does his daily
errands and work, he is beyond expected to suffer from agonizing muscle pain. A
simple task may give the person a hard time in executing the duty. The National
Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (n.d.) pointed out that the main reason
for this event is that -- myasthenia gravis triggers any group of muscles that gradually
exacerbates the muscle fibers to degenerate consequently, a weakness inhibits
especially in hand, limb, neck, and trunk muscles.
Yesteryears, Germany physicians first began systematic approaches and studies
on how to unfold and resolve the problem [ CITATION Nat1 \l 1033 ]. They found out that
this disorder produces weakness, and it fluctuates over a period of time. But, as time
goes by and with the emergence and advancement of technology, the outlook and
insight about the disease progressively unfolded and has enhanced dramatically.
The following are the symptoms of this disorder – a person with Myasthenia
Gravis experiences trouble in talking, the same way goes with Mr. Fapoulas and this
condition is known as dysarthria; eye muscle weakness or ocular myasthenia ; having a
blurry or double vision which is also identified as diplopia; having a hard-time
swallowing the food he intakes; ptosis which means that one eye or both eyes are
drooping; shortness of breathe is one of the notable factors as well; lastly, weakness of
muscles in the hands, fingers, legs and neck[ CITATION Gen \l 1033 ].
The main cause why Mr. Nico Fapoulas might be experiencing this disorder
because of an autoimmune problem. Bershad, Feen, & Suarez (2008) reports that it
happens when the immune system fails to attack tissues, there is a possibility that it
can attack the healthy tissues of a person. With regards to this, the antibodies which
are commonly proteins damage the neuromuscular junction rather than destructive
substances within our body. Hence, it ceases the transmission of a neurotransmitter
substance described as acetylcholine which is very pivotal in the interaction of the
nervous system and muscular system.
Georich’s (2019) study unearthed that the main cause of this disorder is quite
vague, ambiguous, and still unknown to scientists. But they have proven that when a
person’s consanguinity members have developed this disorder, there is a very high
probability that the person also acquires the disorder. Conforming to the National
Institute of Health (2013), this typically occurs at the age of 40 and above.
Even though that the cause is still unidentified, there are a lot of treatments.
With the help of medication which includes immunosuppressants and
corticosteroids[ CITATION Deb18 \l 1033 ], these medicines aim to help the immune system
to diminish its irregular actions that leads to the formation of myasthenia gravis.
Furthermore, there are correspondingly medicines that can be taken in increasing the
contact among the muscles and nerves. Removal of the thymus gland is likewise
beneficial in dealing with myasthenia gravis since this gland of the immune system once
eliminated, the person confirms minimum or lesser muscle weakness. Plasmapheresis
(Plasma Exchange) is a procedure that is capable of deteriorating perilous antibodies
within the blood that beget an improvement and development of the muscular strength
of the person. According to Weatherspoon (2018), same with the above-mentioned
procedures, there is this blood product which is used to cure autoimmune myasthenia
gravis - Intravenous immune globulin. Still, it is not widely used since most of the
people do not know how it works. Lastly, healthy lifestyle.
It cannot be denied that healthy living and lifestyle changes are both essential
and significant to everyone. Whenever people thrive for betterment, even how difficult
it is as long as you stay disciplined, everything will be attained. Nothing worthy comes
easy, these two measures will help people with myasthenia gravis to alleviate the
symptoms. First, obtaining enough and adequate amount of rest that aids to minimize
muscular weakness of the body. Second, avoid getting stressed for it can aggravate the
indications same with exposing yourself to heat.
With the treatment presented over, various individuals having myasthenia gravis
disorder may experience significant improvement about their condition. By exercising
treatment, muscle weakness can be diminished. Thus, medications can be discontinued
and be on halt. Everyone who is diagnosed with this disorder like Mr. Nico Faloupas
must stay positive for there are several and variety of treatments that will lessen the
threats of the myasthenia gravis.
