Introduction
Lesson Topic: The Scarlet Letter, Nathaniel Hawthorne – Video summary/book report
Length of Lesson: 90 minutes

VA SOL:
9.1 The student will plan, present, and critique dramatic readings of literary selections.
a) Choose a literary form for presentation, such as a poem, monologue, scene
from a play, or story.
b) Adapt presentation techniques to fit literary form.
c) Use verbal and nonverbal techniques for presentation.
d) Evaluate impact of presentation.

Cognitive Objections:
Students will create a short news video
Students will present information about plot, symbolism, and characters of The Scarlet
Letter
Students will critique presentations

Materials and Advanced Preparation:


Video recording hardware
Laptops
Copies of The Scarlet Letter
Markers
Paper
Safety Pins

Teaching and Learning Sequence


Introduction/Anticipatory Set (20 minutes)
The teacher will meet students at the door and ask them to sit in their assigned seats.
The teacher will hand out blank pieces of paper, markers, and safety pins
The teacher will ask each student to decorate their scarlet letter and put it on

Lesson Development:
The teacher will lecture for a small amount of time wrapping up The Scarlet Letter (10
minutes MAX)
The teacher will then show short video
The teacher will then explain their project – the students are to make a 2-3 minute video
resembling a ‘breaking news story” where they have to explain the who, what, when,
where of The Scarlet Letter
The students will have time in class to video each other and begin editing. Creativity is
encouraged. (50 minutes)

Closure:
The teacher will make sure all students understand the basics of The Scarlet Letter by
asking high-level questions at the end of class. Also, the teacher will review relevant
literary terms and go over any questions.

Homework:
The students are to write out their script, which they will present on the video and turn it
in for a homework grade. They will also be asked to select one quote from the last section
of the book and write a 2-3 paragraph analysis. Students will have time next class to
finish up the video.

Assessment:
Formative: The teacher will monitor their overall understanding of the novel as he/she
walks around the classroom. The teacher will assist with the video and take not of
questions asked and answered.

Summative: Each video will be graded based on creativity and proof of general
understanding. It will be a quiz grade.
