I. Content and Standards:

CC.1.3.910.G: Analyze the representation of a subject or a key scene in

two different artistic mediums, including what is emphasized or absent in
each treatment.

II. Prerequisites:

Student must have read up to chapter four of, Of Mice and Men. Students must also be
familiar with the set up of Collins Writing, as well as have chapter four study guide questions
completed.

Students must be familiar with Vocabulary words.

III. Essential Questions (provide a framework)

What connections can be made through music to Of Mice and Men?

IV. Instructional Objective:

Student will be able to recognize similarities between music and text of a specific time and
draw conclusions.

V. Instructional Procedures: BDA

The teacher will set up the computer to have the necessary content pulled up. The teacher
will project the bell ringer on the board in order to have students understand what is expected
of them before the bell rings. The teacher will begin the lesson by talking about the students
beginning activity, giving the students a general overview of what is going to happen during
the class period. The students will get their new Lit term, and they will write down the term in
their notebook. This is a practice set up by the cooperating teacher, and is done weekly.
After students go through their lit term Tuesday review, the teacher will then have students
change gears and speak about the story Of Mice and Men. The teacher will explain that the
student will have to listen to a song twice, the first time they will just listen to the words of the
song. Then the students will be presented a prompt that follows type two writing under the
Collins system. After the students get the prompt, the teacher will play the song again and
the students will draw conclusions based on this prompt. The teacher will go around the
class and stamp homework from last week while the students listen to the song so that there
is no down time when the students are finished with the writing. The teacher will collect
student type two writings and do a call out on student papers that demonstrate a connection
between the story and the song. After this, the teacher will have students look at their study
guide questions that they completed for homework from last week. The teacher will read the
question aloud to the students, and allow the students to discuss the answer in their groups
for two minutes. The teacher will then randomly select a student using a Popsicle stick with a
name on it. The student will give an answer and the teacher will ask questions and adjust as
needed. After all questions are reviewed. The teacher will instruct students to take out their
computers and go on quizlet live. The students will get in to teams that are randomly
assigned and do a vocabulary game that is an interactive student centered game on the
computer. This program has students compete to see who can correctly answer the most
questions related to their vocabulary words that they have received. The students will
complete this game for the remainder of the period. If the internet is down, the students will
play a game with their vocab words. At the conclusion of the lesson the teacher will give a
brief overview of what the students did, and what they will plan on doing next class period.
The teacher will reinforce the LEQ and randomly call on a student to see if they can answer
the LEQ.

VI. Materials and Equipment:

Teacher: Desktop Computer, projector, saved bell ringers, saved study guide questions,
saved lit term video.

Students: pencil and notebook, homework (study guide questions), laptops for quizlet live.

VII. Assessment/Evaluation:

Students will be observed during the individual work portion. The teacher will check student
work in their notebooks, as well as grade their type two writing and student guide questions.
The teacher will also assess students based on their answers from the call out questions, as
well as student random selection for the study guide.

VIII. VII. Differentiation: Individualized Activities:

Students can extend this lesson by listening to another song that has to do with themes
based on Of Mice and Men. Students can also read period pieces, or watch period films/plays
that can connect to finding meaning from different mediums.

IX. Technology:

Student laptops: provide interactive experience. Projector: allow students to see what is on
the teachers screen for added learning value.

X. Self-Assessment

The teacher will review student type two responses, as well as gauge class participation of
the study guide questions and make notes of questions that might have tripped students up.
The teacher will then review any information that seemed to be missing from student before
the teacher continued to the next chapter in the book.
