guidelines for using Zoom in a synchronous environment with students

1. Never share your meeting link or invitation on a website, social media platform, or public forums.
Also, do not post screen shots of your class anywhere online.

2. Use random meeting IDs as often as possible, avoid using your Personal Meeting ID (PMI) for public
meetings. If you must use your PMI be sure you are following the other steps on this list.

3. Set your waiting room up and prevent users from joining the meeting before you.

5. Send the meeting invite through email, especially if the participant does not have a zoom account.
Also, clicking the link is usually easier for younger students over typing in a join code.

6. Once all users have joined the meeting, lock the meeting so no one else can jump in.

7. If an unwanted user joins remember you can remove participants from the meeting. (if you
accidentally remove an incorrect participant you can “allow removed participants to join” to correct
this).

Prevent users from screen sharing during the call by locking screen share in your meeting settings. You
can adjust these as needed during the meeting if necessary.

8. Use the mute participants feature often during the meeting. Also, use the “mute upon entry” setting
when scheduling the meeting.

10. Teachers should not use breakout rooms with students because they cannot be monitored by the
teacher while in the breakout room and inappropriate behavior could occur.

Considerations before Zooming with students

Instead of using a Wi-Fi connection have students use a wired connection if they can.

Be sure your device is fully charged or plugged in.

Set a dedicated learning spot that’s comfortable and well lit

Make sure you are dressed appropriately and be aware of the camera.

Suggest to students how they should ask questions; use the chat, wave at the camera etc.

Encourage active participation (not just vocal, teaching tools like thumbs up thumbs down etc.)

Discourage cheating on assignments (teaching tip – use more student demonstration, project based and
personalized questioning techniques vs. just right or wrong questions and worksheets)
Negative Review:

Some teachers have technological difficulties like unstable Wi-Fi connection during Zoom lessons. This
fact is not anyone’s fault because it is a technological issue. But For lecture to be effective, you really
need a stable Wi-Fi. Without that, the sound is not stable; students and teachers will hear an echo and
repeat themselves.

some teachers do not do not discuss about topics in detail as they discuss in normal class In online class
they just going straight forward to topic without giving any examples.

Some teacher’s phone was not in silent mode call and message notification distract student during
lecture.

Some teacher have unnecessary applications, browser windows, open in their mobile/computer and
that effect lecture accuracy.

Regardless classes time were schedule properly, some teachers do not take whole class and finish class
before time.

Some teacher did not use headphones during the lecture and it cause difficulty for student to hear and
focus.

Some teacher use mobile for zoom meetings, however some in-meeting controls such as creating and
launching polls, starting breakout rooms, and controlling who screen shares aren’t available on a mobile
devices.

Some teacher have low version mobile phone and gallery view is limited in it so they cannot see all
students during lecture.

Some teacher do not know how to launch a poll during class for class room attendance.

Some teacher do not disable the private chat feature that cause students to start having private unseen
conversations during class.

Some teacher do not record zoom meeting so the absent students cannot have their lectures if required.

Some teacher mute the student thus do not allow students to ask questions during class

Positive Review:

Some teacher share white board and explain the lecture by drawing and typing. It help the student to
better engage and collaborate with students.

Some teacher use different learning elements such as: PowerPoint slide sharing, video sharing, chatting
enable student to understand their lecture better.

Some teachers use other illustrative elements, and video tutorials to make their lesson more attractive.

Some teachers give tasks, homework, quizzes, tests so that students can fully commit to a subject.

Some teachers motivate students and actively engage them by doing group activities to keep their
interest in lecture.
