*What is Zoom?
Zoom is an online platform that provides
video communications and online chat services
for distance learning. Zoom is free for unlimited
one-on-one meetings and 40-minute group
meetings for up to 100 participants.
Using this valuable software as a tool of
engagement, teachers and students can see and
speak to one another in real time when not in the
same location. Additionally, Zoom provides other
engagement components within its application
such as the chat, whiteboard, and emoji features.
*How is Zoom used in the classroom ?
The teacher will schedule a Zoom class at the desired
date/time and copy the invitation details to send to the students.
After joining a Zoom class, students can see the teacher and
other students in the class including them. The teacher will
share screen to teach the students about the lesson. Students can
be automatically muted by teachers with that setting. During
Zoom class, if there is a question students can show their hands,
put unmute and speak, everyone in the zoom class will hear
their voices. Zoom class offers the chance to participate
personally and take ownership of their learning, providing an
opportunity to answer without pressure of right/wrong and
eliminating the discomfort of performing in front of others
Pros
*Create a positive learning environment where all
students discover new ways to manage their learning,
develop their autonomy, have regular opportunities for
respond and actively learn.
*Students can also use the private chat feature in the
classroom to share assignment questions with teachers
to help keep their answers confidential.
*Zoom classes promote skills needed in language
learning, such as higher-order thinking and problem-
solving skills when interacting, collaborating, and
sharing information
Cons
*Technical problems can seriously impede
the teaching-learning process through zoom
sessions. Lack of time in Zoom sessions is
also considered a limitation of learning with
Zoom.
* The amount of time that some students
may need to study in the Zoom setting
makes it difficult to interact and collaborate
with classmates.
