Guidelines to Support Schools Using Live Video with Students
From next week, students will be provided with opportunities to use Zoom to interact online with
their teachers. You will be informed through Google Classroom and/or Seesaw of your times,
passwords, and login details.

Zoom has been tested by the department and some functionality such as live recordings and one-
on-one chats have been disabled. This is for the privacy of the students and other household
members who are present while the live video session is happening.

Parents can help their child set up devices but should not join any group/class chats being
moderated by the teacher.

Your child’s learning will not be disadvantaged if you choose for them not to be involved in the live
video sessions.

Department Guidelines
Zoom can customise backgrounds either by blurring the background or loading a static picture.

All students should do the following before joining the session: -

• Blur or set their background to an appropriate static picture. This should be done before
the session commences and can be saved for future sessions.
• Try and set up in front of a wall rather than an open room, corridor or space where there
will be people moving around.

Sessions will be no more than 20-30 minutes each.

Zoom sessions cannot be recorded and screenshots cannot be taken during Zoom classroom
sessions.

Setting Up Zoom & Your Environment

Students will need to access Zoom through their student portal. Detailed steps and video
instructions on how to join a Zoom meeting will be posted on the student's Google Classroom and
Seesaw.

Teachers will pre-set the Zoom session so that all microphones are off when students enter the
room.

Where possible, students should be in a quiet space with the blurred background or appropriate
static background (eg a wall rather than the room or corridor). If possible, please provide your
child with headphones so they can listen without distraction.
How the teacher will facilitate a Zoom Classroom
The video classroom is a classroom and the same school behaviour expectations apply to this
environment.

Two teachers will be present in the session so one can lead the activity and one can support
with the technology.

Best Practice for Zoom Sessions

The teacher will welcome students and lead a short 20 minute activity. When appropriate,
teachers will invite students to contribute and turn their microphone on. Student should not turn
their microphone on or off, this will be managed by the teacher.

The role of Parents/Carers

For us to run these sessions successfully it is important that parents and carers:

 Help their child set up the Zoom (see attached steps). Allow at least 10-15 minutes to set up the first time;

 Ensure the computer or device is set up in a quiet space without movement or an open room behind your
child;

 Remain in the room, but not in the meeting, while the session is in place. Parent and carers should not be on
screen or participating in the session; and

 Maintain the privacy of all students – no photos or screenshots of the Zoom session are to be taken.

Please
look at the

department’s Digital Citizenship website and the eSafety Commissioner website where there is helpful
advice for parents and carers to help their children have safe, enjoyable experiences online.
