To motivate the students for speaking, the teacher asks them to read a small text on page 13 and discuss the questions
about the importance of summer camps in the USA and Portugal.
The students watch a video of a summer camp in the UK and do the exercises. The teacher checks on their work.

Procedure

The teacher greets the students and writes the number of the lesson and the summary.
To revise the past, he/she asks the students who went to a summer camp last summer. He/She writes the sentence on the
board.
– Laura went to a summer camp last summer.
The teacher also asks another student what he was doing while Laura was in the summer camp.
– I was spending some days on the Mediterranean coast.
The students open their books at page 18 and read some more examples of the past simple and continuous. They identify
the type of action that each tense describes. After reading the table, they do the first exercises, consisting of completing a
song with the verbs in the past simple. They listen to the song to check their answers and discuss the meaning of the song.
The second exercise consists of completing sentences with either the past simple or the past continuous. Correction follows.
The students divide into two groups and play noughts and crosses (Xs and Os). The teacher asks each group the past simple
or continuous of a verb and the group who succeeds in placing three respective marks in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal row
wins the game.

He/She explains that one of his/her students went to a summer camp and wrote a postcard to a friend describing his/her
experience.
The students read the postcard on page 20 and identify the address, signature, message, greeting and ending. They decide
on the formality of the card. They imagine they are also at a summer camp and write a short postcard to a friend, with the
help of the language bank. Some students read their cards to the class.
After that, the students read an interview about the ideal summer camp and match the questions and the answers.
They interview their partner, following that model. They take turns. The teacher goes around the room to check on their work.
Two students may role-play it to the class.

They discuss what is a school exchange, if they or a friend of theirs have ever participated in that type of programme and, if
so, the positive and negative aspects of such experience. They identify some organisations and programms that promote
school exchanges.
In order to know more about the topic, they watch a video presenting Erasmus+. They do some exercises while watching
and, after the correction, they talk to their partner, saying if they would or wouldn’t like to take part in the Erasmus+
programme or not and why.
The students read/listen to the text ‘An unforgettable experience’ and do the exercises that follow.

The students open their books at page 26 to know the other correlative conjunctions and understand their use.
They do the exercises on the topic. In the first exercise they have to complete sentences and in the second one they have to
rewrite sentences with correlative conjunctions. The teacher checks on their work.

Procedure

The teacher greets the students and writes the number of the lesson and the summary.
He/She starts the lesson by asking the students the means of transport most used by school exchangers. When the students
mention the plane, the teacher elicits some vocabulary from them. To expand that vocabulary, they open their books at page
28 and match the pictures with the words. They also identify the words being explained. Correction follows.
After that, they listen to five airport announcements and write the name of the city where each plane is going to. They listen
again and complete the gaps with the words or numbers they hear.
The last exercise requires that the students match verbs about air travel with the corresponding definitions. The teacher
checks their work.
Some students may describe their air travel experiences using the vocabulary they learnt.

The teacher asks the students what they used to do in their summer holidays that now they don’t and what they didn’t use to
do but now has become a habit. They share their ideas with the class.
Next, the students read a small text and ad about the habit of learning a foreign language. They do the comprehension
exercises. Correction follows.

As a writing task, they imagine that an English friend is coming to their school with his/her class. They write an email to their
friend, answering the questions: ‘What is your school like? Do I have to speak your language all the time? What can we do
during our stay?’. The teacher goes around the room to help the students. When they finish, some students read their email
to the class.
Homework: The teacher asks the students to read the information on page 37 and do some research work on eTwinning.
