MTN-201: Transport Phenomena

Time: 2 Hours Weightage: 50% Max. Marks: 50

Note: Attempt all questions. All questions carry equal marks.

Q1.Discuss the phenomenon of interdiffusion in solids by the example of Kirkendall effect and
derive expression for interdiffusion coefficient.

Q2. Which of the following situation / situations is / are not possible in a convergent divergent
nozzle? A very brief comment is also required in support of your choice.
(i) supersonic flow of an incompressible fluid
(ii) Pt = PE
(iii) PE = PB
(iv) Pt* > PE
Where Pt and PE denote respectively the pressures at the throat and exit point of the nozzle,
and PB is the pressure of ambience to which the nozzle is discharging.
Q3. Derive the general expression for the net radiant heat transfer, Q12 between two black surfaces
of areas A1 and A2 enclosed in an enclosure of non- conducting (refractory) but reradiating
walls. The view factor of surface 1 with respect to surface 2 without any enclosure may be
expressed as F12.

Q4. A stainless steel sphere (k=16 W/m.K) having a radius of 2 cm is exposed to a convection
environment at 20 0C, h = 15 W/m2.K. Heat is generated uniformly in the sphere at a rate of
1.0 MW/m3. Calculate the steady state temperature at the center of the sphere.

Q5. Water is pumped through the annulus formed between the two tubes of 5 cm and 3 cm in
diameter (inner diameter of outer tube and outer diameter of inner tube respectively) at a
velocity of 0.5 m/s. If the inlet temperature of the water is 20 0C and 3 cm diameter tube is
maintained at 80 0C, find the heat transfer coefficient (in k cal/m2 hr 0C) between water and
small tube surface. The following equation may be considered to hold good for this situation;
Nu = 0.023 (Re)0.8(Pr)0.33
Take the following properties of water at 50 0C: Density ρ = 988 kg/m3, cp = 0.997 kcal/kg.
0
C, Thermal conductivity k = 0.557 kcal/m.hr.0C, Kinematic viscosity ν =0.55 X 10-6 m2/s
