Exercise No. 3
Extraction of Caffeine from Tea

I. OBJECTIVES: To understand a solute's solubility in a pair of solvents. Learn the properties and characteristics that
explain such a reaction by taking advantage of a solute's different solubilities. Likewise, learn the extraction method and
comprehend the process of isolating and targeting compounds.

Results Inference
The experiment was a liquid-liquid extraction since
caffeine was extracted from the tea by mixing the
Weight of tea + beaker = 78.5 g solute (caffeine) into two immiscible solvents (water
and dichloromethane). The solute is soluble in the
organic solvent based on the distribution coefficient
Weight of beaker = 76.5 g and so, dichloromethane is used to extract the
caffeine. Sodium carbonate was added after the tea
had been boiled in distilled water and cooled. Take
Weight of tea =2g note that dichloromethane is volatile, so the liquid
was bathed in ice before adding the
dichloromethane. Anyhow, the sodium carbonate will
react with the tannins (which are responsible for the
dark brown hue) to make the tannins water-soluble,
Weight of crude caffeine = 0.106 g
preventing them from mixing with the organic solvent
when added after and making it easier to extract the
caffeine. Then, dichloromethane was added, causing
% Recovery = 5.3%
a separation. The caffeine is found in the liquid that
has settled below the dark aqueous as seen in the
video. After separating the dark aqueous from the
dichloromethane containing the caffeine in a
separatory container, a drying agent (sodium sulfate)
was added into the liquid to eliminate any remaining
aqueous floating in the liquid. Therefore, the
remaining aqueous settled at the bottom and a
cotton was used to filter the aqueous from the
caffeine. Consequently, it was all caffeine within the
round-bottom flask, which was then rotovapped to
evaporate the solvent.
