We would like to congratulate and formally welcome your son/daughter to Langley Grammar School Sixth Form. The
majority are students who have chosen to return to Langley Grammar School following their GCSEs, however we also
welcome young men and women who have completed their GCSEs at schools elsewhere.
The Sixth Form has a strong academic reputation. We do not provide vocational courses at Langley Grammar School;
we focus on A level qualifications and offer a wide range of different subjects to meet the diverse interests and
ambitions of our students. We have high expectations of our students in terms of their commitment to their studies
and their self-motivation. We match this with a high level of support, personal academic mentoring and an excellent
range of facilities and resources. Our Sixth Form Centre includes classrooms, lecture theatre, a supervised study area
and a study room for quiet working equipped with computers.
All our Sixth Form students have achieved well during their GCSEs but the approach to independent study at A level is
demanding and students need to start reviewing, researching and being pro-active about their learning from the very
first day in the Sixth Form. They need to be prepared to stretch themselves and to make lots of mistakes, it is all about
building resilience to cope with these mistakes. We recommend that they study for 20 hours per week outside lesson
time, half of that time on tasks set by subject staff but the remaining half on study which involves consolidating work
covered during lessons and research determined by the student.
Keeping you well informed of your son/daughter's progress is essential if we are to support these students to reach
their academic potential. We have assessment points each term which result in either a grade sheet which can be
viewed online, Parent/Teacher Consultation afternoon or a student-led review to which you will be invited to attend.
We track students and support their progress in between these points and will inform you of any concerns we may
have. We encourage you to assist by informing us of any concerns or additional issues you think may be impacting on
their progress as soon as possible. I have listed our contact details below for your reference. Please make sure that the
contact details for you are kept as current as possible by contacting the Sixth Form Administrator/Student Manager.
All Year 12 students are required to be in school at 10:15 on Friday 3 September. The admissions process for all students
will be completed on that day and you can expect to be in school until 13:30.
This is our induction day which we refer to as ‘New Beginnings Day’, you will be introduced to your colleagues in your
tutor group, you will also be issued with your final items of uniform i.e. a tie and blazer badge for boys, and a brooch for
girls and also be given a copy of our Sixth Form Student Handbook. The aim of this day is to immerse you in Sixth Form
life, to challenge you and to create the right mindset for a successful Sixth Form experience. You are not required to wear
school uniform on this day, we would suggest comfortable clothes and trainers suitable for team-building exercises.
Please bring some basic stationery with you, in particular a felt-tip pen. The morning will consist of a session with your
Sixth Form Tutor, two academic skills workshops and an Elite Academy leadership session.
Please note that all uniform requirements are documented within the Sixth Form Information booklet. Year 12 students will
be required to be in school by 8.20am a.m. on Friday 4 September for registration and the normal timetable, the day will
finish at 15:20.
In order to ease the transition from GCSE to AS level study each subject has produced ‘Transition Work’ for you to
complete during the summer. If you currently study at the school you will have submitted Part A already and will be
working on Part B. If you are joining us from another school you will be expected to submit Part A to the relevant subject
teacher during the first lesson for each subject in September for assessment. This forms part of the formal admissions
process to the Sixth Form.
We charge an enrolment fee of £50 which covers a number of items all of which are detailed in the charging policy in this
pack, this will appear on your Parent Pay account, prompt payment of this would be appreciated.
Photographic Consent √ √
The Transition Work and Discovery Lists found at this onedrive link is designed to ease your transition into
the Sixth Form and to help you engage with your studies from Day One. Students currently at the school
have submitted this work and it forms part of the official enrolment on a course.
Please complete the Transition Work for the subjects you have chosen and investigate some of the
resources/ activities found on the Discovery Lists
For new joiners your subject teachers will be expecting you to submit this work during the first lesson in each
subject. This work will be assessed so that you will be able to see if you are working at the right level early
on.

Sixth Form Charges
This document sets out the various charges which are likely to be incurred during your son or daughter’s
time in the Sixth Form at Langley Grammar School.
You will be required to make a payment of £50, this is the Sixth Form core charge by or on the ‘New
Beginnings Day’ . This requirement applies to every student joining our Sixth Form and is not negotiable.
The payment can be made via Parent Pay if you are currently studying at the school or when your Parent
Pay account is setup as a new joiner.
In addition, the core charge covers the participation costs of a number of aspects of the Sixth Form ‘Passport
for Life’ programme, including:
In the interests of efficiency the core charge includes payment in advance for these events rather than asking
for a number of small separate contributions at various stages in the year.
Educational Visits
The cost of the expedition depends on the destination, but is likely to be in the order of £2,900 per
participant. The school will be able to support a limited number of fundraising opportunities, such as selling
refreshments at parent-teacher consultations, but participating students are expected to raise the majority
of the money themselves.
Day visits
A range of subject-specific day visits are offered. These may include revision conferences, concerts field
studies, and visits to museums or art galleries. Costs will vary; some visits will involve coach travel, while for
those in London students may be asked to make their own way to the venue at their own expense. For
some events entry is free of charge, others are ticketed. Information about the visit and the costs involved
will be provided as far as possible ahead of the event; however, please be aware that opportunities can
sometimes arise at relatively short notice.
Examination fees
Some Sixth Form enrichment courses will also involve examination entry fees. In a few cases (eg Public
Speaking, Silver Arts Award), the entry fees may be higher than those for conventional A-level qualifications;
in this case students may be asked for a contribution to cover the difference. The expedition part of the
Duke of Edinburgh’s Award also carries a cost of £50-60. The IFS Financial Capability examination carries a
£40 entry fee which may need to be covered if a resit is required.
Educational resources
In most subjects students will have access to E-textbooks through their ipads. Typically, textbooks for A-
Level courses will cost around £20. Where the use of such a textbook is essential, it will be provided by the
school; in other cases, students will be advised to purchase it themselves, or to access the book in the
Library.
Many subjects will make educational resources such as revision notes and past papers available through the
school site Sapientia. Students may download and print these resources if they wish, but many will prefer to
access them via a computer or heir ipad. Students have a limit imposed on the number of sheets they can
print in school and we would encourage them to use their quota wisely.
There is a 16-19 Bursary Fund available within school which could help with any education-related costs that
may arise during the school year. To apply for a bursary, you must be aged between 16 and 19 and in full-
time or part-time further education or training.
There are two types of bursaries available for students from low income households, more information and
application forms can be found on the school website www.lgs.slough.sch.uk, under the student tab.
Applications are accepted throughout the school year.

(Parent/Guardian):
The information on this form is processed electronically for administrative purposes and is subject to the
General Data Protection Regulations.
Use of video and voice recording as part of day to day curriculum activities for teaching purposes generally
does not need permission from parents.
There are legal restrictions in place regarding the use by schools of biometric data such as fingerprints; under the
Protection of Freedoms Act 2012 (sections 26 to 28), we are required to notify the parents of each student and obtain
the written consent of at least one parent before being able to use your son/daughter’s biometric information for an
automated system. We would be grateful if you would therefore read the following formal notification carefully, and
then sign and return the accompanying permission slip.
Biometric information is information about a person’s physical or behavioural characteristics that can be used to
identify them, for example, information from their fingerprint. The school would like to use information from each
student’s fingerprint for the purpose of monitoring the attendance of Sixth Form students when they leave the school
site at lunchtime, registering during the afternoon and signing in for supervised study.
The information will be used as part of an automated biometric recognition system, which will take measurements of
your son/daughter’s fingerprint and convert these measurements into a template to be stored on the system. These
measurements form the information used to recognise each student when they use the system. An image of the actual
fingerprint is not stored, nor is the information stored enough to re-create a fingerprint image.
The law places specific requirements on schools when using personal information about students for the purposes of an
automated biometric recognition system. For example, the school cannot use the information for any purpose other
than those for which it was originally obtained and made known to the parent(s); the school must ensure that the
information is stored securely, must tell you what it intends to do with the information, and cannot disclose personal
information to another person/body unless the law allows it. Please note that when your son/daughter leaves the
school, or if for some other reason he/she ceases to use the biometric system, his/her biometric data will be securely
deleted.
The written consent of at least one parent is required in order for us to process your son or daughter’s fingerprint.
You can also object to the proposed processing of your son/daughter’s biometric information at a later stage, or
withdraw any consent you have previously given. This means that, if you give consent but later change your mind, you
can withdraw this consent. Please note that any consent, withdrawal of consent or objection from a parent must be in
writing. Even if you have consented, your son/daughter can object or refuse at any time to their biometric information
being taken/used. Their objection does not need to be in writing. We would appreciate it if you could discuss this with
your son/daughter and explain to them that they can object to this if they wish.
We would be happy to answer any questions you or your son/daughter may have. If you do not wish your
son/daughter’s biometric information to be processed by the school, or your son/daughter objects to such processing,
the law says that we must provide reasonable alternative arrangements for students who are not going to use the
automated system when they leave the school site at lunchtime, registering during the afternoon or signing in for
supervised study. If you give consent to the processing of your son/daughter’s biometric information, please sign, date
and return the enclosed consent form to the school.
We hope you will support the system by giving your consent so that we can monitor Sixth Form attendance more
accurately and it will mean that the process of registering is easier and more convenient for your son/daughter.
CONSENT FORM FOR THE USE OF BIOMETRIC INFORMATION IN SCHOOL
Please complete this form if you consent to the school taking and using information from your
son/daughter’s fingerprint by Langley Grammar School as part of an automated biometric recognition
system. This biometric information will be used by Langley Grammar School for the purpose of
monitoring the attendance of Sixth Form students when they leave the school site at lunchtime,
registering during the afternoon and signing in for supervised study.
In signing this form, you are authorising the school to use your son/daughter’s biometric information for
this purpose until he/she either leaves the school or ceases to use the system. If you wish to withdraw
your consent at any time, this must be done so in writing and sent to the school at the following address:
Once your son/daughter ceases to use the biometric recognition system, his/her biometric information
will be securely deleted by the school.
Having read guidance provided to me by Langley Grammar School, I give consent to information from
the fingerprint of my son/daughter:
being taken and used by Langley Grammar School for use as part of an automated biometric recognition
system for purchasing school meals, accessing the school library, accessing the print system, registering
their attendance at the school and accessing the school site through access control doors.
Please return this form to the Sixth Form Administrator by Friday 10 September.
5 July 2021
Dear Parents
In 2013, the school initiated a project where Key Stage 3 students used iPads in lessons to
support their learning; the intention was to improve both the efficiency and range of learning
experiences we could offer students. Examples of this are removing the need for students to
carry around multiple resources, ready access to the internet to advance discussion and
argument in lessons, increased capacity for independent study; as well as the ability to produce
creative media and ready access to university designed MOOCs and iTunesU courses. Having
continued this rollout through GCSE groups and into year 12, we believe this capability remains
extremely helpful for students, particularly as they begin their A-level courses.
We want our students to leave Langley Grammar with a high level of digital literacy, ahead of
the technology curve and prepared for university and the workplace where blended learning
(technology alongside paper and pen) is the norm. At Langley Grammar the impact on learning
of using iPads has been recognised by Apple, and we are one of a number of Apple
Distinguished Schools.
This letter explains how we expect students starting A-level courses at Langley Grammar in
September 2021 to use an iPad in lessons and private study to support their learning. The
school will purchase essential apps at 50% of the usual price through Apple’s Education Volume
Purchasing Programme and there will be no software costs for parents. All students have
access to 5 free copies of the Microsoft Office suite which operates across all platforms,
including home computers, and includes cloud storage and access to Sapientia, our online
learning platform. If you are joining the school this year and you are currently facing difficult
financial circumstances, we may be able to offer some financial support; should this be the case
please contact Mrs Dobbs, Assistant Headteacher, via the school office.
• Students can use a device from the limited pool of school-purchased iPads; They can be
collected from the ICT technicians each morning and returned at the end of the day; but
we cannot guarantee individual access and it will not be possible for students to take
these off the premises, unless in exceptional circumstances. To take full advantage of
the use of the iPad for learning, it is important that students have access both at school
and at home. Other than that, they may be used freely as if the device were their own
subject to the school’s expectations which are outlined below.
• Students may provide their own iPad. Any model from iPad 5 th Generation or iPad Air 4th
Generation onwards is acceptable and will provide broadly the same functionality, and
we suggest a minimum storage capacity of 32gb. We do not recommend iPad minis as
we do not regard the screen size as suitable for the long-term study. Refurbished,
reconditioned or second-hand iPads are a viable alternative and are available from a
number of retail outlets or online. Please note the school cannot be held liable for
damage or loss to personally provided devices, and we cannot cover them on our own
insurance; parents are therefore advised to make appropriate arrangements to ensure
that they have adequate cover in place. Some household contents policies will include
such cover. Alternatively, you could purchase a policy from a company who specialise in
insuring digital devices (commonly known as ‘Gadget Insurance’).
• A third option to take advantage of the school’s partnership with three companies called
Jigsaw24, CHG and CPU Group to supply iPads through a leasing scheme that operates
over 24 months, either as monthly payments or as a single one-off payment. If you
choose to lease a device, you will acquire full ownership at the end of the lease with no
further payments. All iPads will be supplied with STM or ZAGG cases; they will have
worldwide insurance cover for accidental damage and theft (but not loss), and an
extended 2 year warranty. A summary of the insurance from CPU will be made available
on the school website (Teaching and Learning > iPads for Learning). The device must
always be kept in the case provided; and insurance claims will not be met if an
alternative case is used. Please note that should your iPad need to be replaced during
the 2 year period of insurance, the policy is not ‘replacement as new’; and a replacement
device to the nearest comparable specification or value will be provided, taking into
account the age and condition of the property. The insurance ‘Keyfacts’ document and
policy wording are also available on the school website.
Because of the arrangements we have with Jigsaw24 and CPU there is also an option to acquire
an Apple MacBook should you wish to do so; this is in addition to and not as an alternative to an
iPad.
If you choose to lease an iPad through the scheme there is a range of devices to choose from.
The prices for leasing either as a single payment or 24 monthly payments can be found at the
end of this letter. In addition, for all devices, you may also purchase an Apple Pencil or upgrade
the case to one with an integrated keyboard. Please note these are not essential and are not
covered by the insurance policy. You may wish to compare these costs against the typical retail
price, but please note that all prices quoted in this letter include a case, a two-year warranty
and insurance.
Decisions about parental contributions and the type of device to be leased can be made through
the CPU Parent Portal https://www.cpu.co.uk/cint/mobilelearning/selectSchool.asp
The password is LGSYear12-21. If you have any queries relating to access and use of the portal
you should contact CPU directly using the details on the login page. We would ask you to make
your selection by Monday 20 September. When the devices have arrived in school they will be
set up and distributed before the October half-term holiday. Training will be given to students
joining the Sixth Form shortly after. In the event that Jigsaw24 do not receive a sufficient
number of orders via the portal they may withdraw the leasing option and we would then
communicate with any parents affected by this.
As the devices will be using the School’s WiFi and students will be using apps purchased by the
school through a substantial educational discount, all devices (whether leased or those provided
by the student) must be ‘enrolled’ onto a Mobile Device Management (MDM). Langley Grammar
School currently uses ‘Jamf Cloud’, as is common practice in many schools with 1:1 device
programmes. Device Management supports the school in complying with the government’s
expectations regarding safeguarding. It also enables us to purchase and deploy apps to iPads
and streamlines iPad management. The school’s clear expectation has always been that the
MDM remains on iPads throughout a student’s time in school, including Sixth Form. This also
prepares students for some of the practices they will have to comply with at both university and
in the workplace.
To automate application of MDM to iPads, they must be enrolled in Apple’s ‘Device Enrolment
Programme’ (DEP). The consequences of being enrolled in DEP are:
• if the MDM is removed by the student, or iPad is reset to factory settings, MDM will
automatically be reapplied.
• An iPad must be removed from DEP once no longer in use by a student, e.g. if student
leaves or iPad is resold. This is managed automatically when student leaves the school
or presents a replacement iPad for configuration.
• Students are issued with Managed AppleIDs, however personal IDs can be used
alongside these for some services on the device. Please note, this does not include
FindMyiPad.
If you provide your own device and it has already been used, please ensure that you have
backed up anything you wish to keep to the iCloud, signed out of all Apple IDs and factory reset
before bringing the device into school. If the device has not met these criteria, we will not be
able to accept it. We impose limited additional restrictions on the functionality of the iPads,
which includes access to the AppStore and other instant message applications. Do not use the
restore function in Cloud backup – if you do, this will remove the MDM configuration and require
the device to be wiped again. More restrictions may be re-imposed at any time in line with the
School’s Behaviour Policy.
Finally...
If you have any further questions, please contact me through email via
school@lgs.slough.sch.uk. Please could you advise us using the attached reply slip how you will
be providing your son or daughter with an iPad for use in school.
Yours sincerely

Policy on the use of personal computers by Sixth Form students on school premises
Aside from our use of iPads as a school, the school does not recommend the use of personal
computers in school. It provides antivirus, ICT support and other security measures automatically
and free of charge on school computers, whereas you are responsible for maintaining security and
ICT support, at your own cost, on personal computers.
However, if you (as a Sixth Form student) do bring a personal computer to school, you agree to:
