LESSON 2: ARITHMETIC SEQUENCES

I. OBJECTIVES

At the end of the lesson, the student should be able to:

1. Illustrate an arithmetic sequence;
2. Determine nth term of a sequence;
3. Derive the formula for the sum of n terms of an arithmetic sequence;
4. Determine arithmetic mean; and
5. Determine the sum of n terms of an arithmetic sequence.
II. SKILLS DEVELOPMENT:
A. Read pages 11-18 (Textbook) Math for Engaged Learning 10
ARITHMETIC SEQUENCES
An arithmetic sequence or arithmetic progression is a sequence such that the
successive terms differ by the same constant. The constant difference is represented
by d and is given by d=an−an−1
Where a n and a n−1 are two succeeding terms of the sequence. To get the
difference between terms, pick two consecutive terms of the sequence and subtract the
term with lower subscript from the term with the higher subscript.
Example:
Determine if sequence of a numbers is an arithmetic sequence. If so, determine the
common difference d.
a. 3, 5, 7, 8, 9, 11 not arithmetic sequence
because they don’t have common difference
b. 480, 240, 120, 60, 30, 15 not arithmetic sequence
because they don’t have common difference
c. 3, 10, 17, … arithmetic sequence
because they have common difference of 7
1 3 5 7
d. , 1, , 2 ,3 arithmetic sequence
2 2 2 2
1
because they have common difference of
2

e. 3, 0, -3, -6, … -18 arithmetic sequence

because they have common difference of -6

nth Term of an Arithmetic Sequence

The nth term of an arithmetic sequence may be determined using the following
Formula:
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d

Example:
Find the expression for nth term of each arithmetic sequence. Then find the
specified term.

a. 3, 10, 17, … (11th term)

a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d
a n=3+ ( n−1 ) 7
a n=3+7 n−7
a n=7 n−4

a 11=7(11)−4
a 11=77−4
a 11=73

b. , 1, , 2 ,3 (25th term)
2 2 2 2
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d

a n= + ( n−1 )

a 25=1212

c. 3, 0, -3, -6, …, -18, … (100th term)

a n=3+ ( n−1 )−3
a n=3+ (−3 n ) +3
a n=−3 n+6

a 100=−3 ( 100 )+6

a 100=−300+ 6
a 100=−294
ARITHMETIC MEANS
There are times when you given two consecutive terms of a sequence and asked to find
the terms between them. These terms are called arithmetic means.

Example:
Find the indicated number of arithmetic means between the given terms of a
sequence.
a. The two arithmetic means between a 1=37∧a4 =52
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d , then solve for d
52=37+ ( 4−1 ) d
52=37+ 3 d
52−37=3 d
15=3 d
3 d 15
=
3 3
d=5
b. The four arithmetic means between a 3=−45∧a 8=5
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d , then solve for d
−45=a 1+ ( 3−1 ) d - First Equation
−45=a 1+2 d
5=a1 + ( 8−1 ) d - Second Equation
5=a1 +7 d
Solve for d using elimination by addition.
−45=a 1+2 d
−1[5=a1+ 7 d ] Multiply the second equation by -1
−45=a 1+2 d
−5=−a1−7 d
−50 −5
=
−5 −5 d
d=10
Solving for a 1 , using either equation with d=10
−45=a 1+2 d
−45=a 1+2 ( 10 )
−45=a 1+20
−a 1=20+45
−a 1=65
a 1=−65
ARITHMETIC SERIES
The sum of the first n terms of the arithmetic sequence is called arithmetic series. The
formula is
n n
Sn= (a 1+ an ) or Sn= [2 a1 + ( n−1 ) d ]
2 2

Example
Find the sum of the first 15 terms of the arithmetic sequence 3,6,9,12 …
Before finding the sum of the first 15 terms, we must find the 15 th term.
d=a2−a1=6−3=3 find the common difference
a n=a1 + ( n−1 ) d use the formula for the nth term of an arithmetic sequence
a 15=3+ ( 15−1 ) 3
a 15=3+14 ( 3 )
a 15=3+42
a 15=45 the 15th term

To find the sum of the first 15 terms, use the formula

n
sn= ( a1 +a n )
2
15
s15= ( 3+ 45 )
2
15
sn= ( 48 )
2
sn=15 ( 24 )
sn=360
Thus, the sum of the first 15 terms is 360.
