EVERYTHING AT A GLANCE
EASY HANDLING OF THE BLOOD MONITORING UNIT BMU 40

Today, constant monitoring of blood parameters is part

of the technological standard in the field of extracorporeal
circulation and is a vitally important factor in patient safety.
Spot check blood analyses from the lab are not sufficient
to allow the operating team to respond rapidly to changes in
the physiological reference data of their patients. With the
BMU 40, MAQUET fills this market gap and provides every
three seconds (venous every six seconds) an up-to-date set
of perfusion data via probes integrated into the tubing lines.

The measuring values are oxygen partial pressure (p aO 2) and

temperature (Ta) on the arterial side, and oxygen saturation
(S v O 2), hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit (Hct) and temperature
(Tv) on the venous side. The current blood flow rate Q Blood
can either be entered manually or transmitted continually
from the MAQUET’s HL 20 heart-lung machine. The BMU 40
can also calculate current oxygen consumption using blood
flow rate, venous saturation and hemoglobin values.

The values are displayed on a 10.4" touchscreen monitor,

which offers enough space for the clear arrangement of
the measured values and display and control elements.

The intuitive navigation bar on the right-hand side of the

screen enables the selection of various viewing options.
Sets of data can be temporarily stored as snapshots and
adjusted using lab figures.

Alarm settings can be edited very quickly by clicking on the

required measuring value directly.

QUICK AND EASY

CALIBRATION USING A 2D-BARCODE SCANNER

With the BMU 40 from MAQUET, time-consuming and

costly calibration procedures using calibration gases are a
thing of the past.

This is made possible by a unique barcode calibration sys-

tem. In order to minimize any measuring tolerances whilst
the heart-lung machine is in use, the calibration data of the
BMU Sensors and the BMU Cells are set by MAQUET in
the factory. The calibration information of each individual
disposable is coded with a specific barcode during the pro-
duction process and printed on a label. This label is read in
directly before use using a barcode scanner integrated into
the BMU 40. In conjunction with the latest sensor technol-
ogy, this enables the achievement of unrivalled measuring
precision.

Thanks to this technology, the BMU 40 is the first blood

analysis monitor which can be calibrated in less than five
seconds. Particularly in emergencies and rapid implementa-
tion of extracorporeal circulation, this guar-antees immedi-
ate precision measuring of the vital blood parameters.

The advantages of barcode calibration at a glance:

Enormous time-saving: calibration in less than
five seconds*
Precise data over the entire duration of perfusion
High efficiency: no additional equipment and expense
for calibration gases

IT’S ALL ABOUT COMMUNICATION

BMU 40 DATA MANAGEMENT

Today intelligent computer-aided data management is

a standard in open heart surgery: The Blood Monitoring
Unit BMU 40 can easily be integrated into existing equip-
ment environments seamlessly and also simplifies the day-
to-day work of the user. This is made possible by two USB
ports and two serial RS-232 ports. Data on current flow rate
can be fed in directly from MAQUET’s HL 20 heart-lung
machine via a connection cable available as an option,
which means that there is no need for the manual updating
of the current blood flow rate Q Blood . The perfusion data can
be transferred continually to the data management software,
e. g., MAQUET JOCAP XL, via a second serial port.

JOCAP XL is designed to display, record, evaluate and

document heart surgery procedures. It enables perfusionists
to track all relevant data during extracorporeal circulation
(ECC) continuously. Thanks to the quick and simple
connection to BMU 40 all measured blood parameters are
transferred to the JOCAP XL database constantly. If
desired, a clearly structured perfusion protocol can be
provided. Seamless integration into hospital management
systems is another benefit of JOCAP XL.

Alternatively, the data can also be recorded on the internal

memory and then be exported to the supplied USB memo-
ry stick, simply by swapping to offline mode.

The data recorded can then be called up on a computer

and can be easily analyzed. The BMU 40 delivers all val-
ues during perfusion via a printer available as an option.
This can be connected up via an additional USB port avail-
able. Printing frequency and data density can be altered
at any time. The BMU 40 can thus be adjusted perfectly to
individual requirements and environmental conditions.
