How ARN Utilizes Parental Involvement for Children with Autism

Introduction

Parents are individuals that have spent the most amount of time with their child with a
complete understanding of their physical, social, developmental, and family history.
Moving forward, parents can support their children by reinforcing the learning at
home. With regular involvement, children would be able to reap the best benefits of
therapy. Hence, in this video, we will be going in-depth on the importance of parental
involvement for children with autism here at ARN.

Parents provide critical input

For the children at ARN, parents can be of integral help to the child by providing
important information about their child’s strengths and weaknesses to our therapists.
They can also convey sensitive information regarding the likes and dislikes of the
child, together with hypersensitivities and allergies that can prevent and reduce the
rise of tantrums and meltdowns during sessions. Such information is crucial as it
allows therapists to plan the sessions well according to your child’s needs to optimize
learning.

As the child progresses, our therapists will provide regular feedback about the
strategies used and daily updates on your child’s receptiveness towards these
strategies. (Therapist writing down the feedback regarding the student for parent to
read) We strongly believe that regular communication between parents and therapists
can ensure that an individualized program can be created for your child to target key
issues.
Involvement in therapy

It is essential for parents to be involved during therapy as it enables them to be aware

of the program that is being implemented. At ARN, parents will have the privilege of
sitting in during therapy sessions to observe how our therapists conduct the hands-on
sessions. Our therapists will coach you to provide behavioural interventions that
parents can practice at home. This enables them to better understand their children and
cope with their struggles efficiently.

Parent-implemented interventions have also resulted in positive changes in children’s

social (Two students socializing. Lana and Mabel playing) and communication skills
(Two student communicating with each other.) By actively engaging with your child
at home, parents can have positive interactions with their child which increases
parent-child bonding.

Designing a behavioural intervention plan

Regular collaboration with your child’s therapist will allow you to design a similar
behavioural intervention plan that can be utilized at home. This can help to
significantly reduce challenging behaviours while promoting positive behaviours and
drastically reduce the frequencies of tantrums and meltdowns.

Conclusion

Here at ARN, we strongly believe in the importance of parental involvement. We aim

to involve parents in every step of their child’s journey at ARN as it is a crucial
component that greatly promotes children’s educational progress and psychological
well-being.
