DISCUSSION
There are certain times in circuit analysis in which the resistors
are neither in parallel nor in series. In the figure below, how are you
going to combine the resistors if they aren’t in series nor parallel?

Many circuits of this type can be simplified by using three-terminal

equivalent networks. These are the wye or tee network and the
delta or pi network. They are usually used in three-phased
networks, electrical filters, and matching networks.

The wye or tee

network

delta or pi network
The wye-delta transformation or vice versa is done in the analysis of
the network whichever proves to be more convenient.
Delta to Wye Conversion
Suppose it is more convenient to work with a wye network in a
place where the circuit contains a delta configuration. We
superimpose a wye network on the existing delta network and find
the equivalent resistances in the wye network. To obtain the
equivalent resistances in the wye network, we compare the two
networks and make sure that the resistance between each pair of
nodes in the network is the same as the resistance between the
same pair of nodes in the Y (or T) network. In general, it is given by:
Product of adjacent resistances∈delta
Rwye = .
∑ of resistances ∈delta
Each resistor in the wye network is the product of the resistors in
the adjacent delta branches, divided by the sum of the resistances
in delta.
Wye to Delta Conversion
On the other hand, for wye to delta transformation, the
conversion rule is that each resistor in the delta network is the sum
of all possible products of wye resistors taken two at a time, divided
by the opposite wye resistor.

Rdelta =
∑ of products of adjacent resistances ∈wye .
Opposite resistance ∈wye
CONCLUSION
In the performance of the experiment, we only did the
simulation part using the Tina Software since the actual setup might
be too hard for us. By using the software, we were able to draw the
circuit diagram for the delta and wye networks and do the
appropriate transformations, respectively. We were able to identify
the delta and wye connection of resistances based on the circuit
diagram. Also, we were able to compare the equivalent resistance in
delta connected resistors to wye connected resistors and vice versa.
Furthermore, we were able to learn the conversion rule in
transforming wye to delta and delta to wye based on the formula
given.
The only source of error here might be the computation done
using the formula and the way the circuit was drawn in the
software; human error. The software won’t be a cause of error since
it produces exact results and its calculations are always correct.
One way to improve the performance in the experiment is to
familiarize ourselves more to the software used in the circuit
simulation. Some might find it hard in drawing the circuit and might
take a long time in doing so. Since this is our first time using the
software, some were still familiarizing at first but we continued
practice it can be done fast and easy.
QUESTIONS AND PROBLEMS
1. When is the delta connection of resistors equivalent to the wye connected
resistors?
The delta connection of resistors is said to be equivalent to the wye
connected resistors if the corresponding resistances measured between the
pair of terminals (ex. AB, BC, AC) are equal.
2. What are the practical applications of the technique delta-wye
transformation? Discuss briefly the different practical applications.
Some of the application of the delta-wye transformation is in electrical
filters and transformers, to name some. Electrical filters are designed to
perform in industrial environments and can either be in delta or wye
configurations. A delta-wye transformer is a type of three-phase electric power
transformer design that employs delta-connected windings on its primary and
wye connected windings on its secondary.
