Title

- The trend of LED Lighting usage as a source of energy saving

in buildings.

Introduction
- Light can be available whenever it is required. Outside of daylight
hours. Light can be provided wherever it is required. In areas far
from the building envelope. Light can be provided however it is
required. In any quantity and with any distribution. This can be
tailored to provide a variety of requirements. Task lighting, display
lighting, general ambient lighting.

LED stands for light emitting diode. LED lighting products produce

light up to 90% more efficiently than incandescent light bulbs. An
electrical current passes through a microchip, which illuminates the
tiny light sources we call LED and the result is visible light.

Methodology
- In this case study, there were several methods used in order to
answer all the questions given by the lecturer. Collect data from
the catalogue, catalogue must be find at local store or online. To
obtain the lighting type, wattage, efficacy, nominal life, colour
temperature, and lighting price. Observed the type of lighting that
used in the building and identify the switching control method for
controlling lighting system. Next is calculates the electric and
lighting to identify the total number of lamp that required and
compare the bills, cost of lighting installation and the sustainability
between CFL and LED.
Answer
Question 1

3 tubes HID 16.5 50 151 101 50000 10000 4000 4200 200 71

Question2

Based on an observation, there are two types of light that used on

the building that is control with 2 switching method. The one types
of method to switch on the light based on the building observed.

Manual switch

A light switch is a switch most commonly used to operate electric

lights, permanently connected equipment, or electric outlet. This
type of switch are install all over the building to switch on or off the
LED and the CFL types of light.

Question3
Given, recommended illumination level by JKR in a room = 300
lux.

Based on the observation room, the lighting system are currently

used is LED R 433 24W

Length = 3.5m

Width = 3.2m

Total lamps (luminaires), N= ExA

n x F x MF x UF

= 300 x 11.2
1 x 2200 x 0.48 x 0.83

= 3.8 lamp
= 4 lamp
Question 4

I. Energy consumption

LED R 433 24W ( bedroom )

Sarawak Estimated
Lumen Wattage No of Power Estimated Energy

(hour) per unit (RM/ 30
(cent/unit) DAYS)

1521 14 4 0.056 5 0.56 0.18 3.3

Total cost difference between these light = RM5.1 - RM3.3 = RM1.8

Therefore, the used of the recommended LED light are more cheaper.
II. Cost

LED R 433 24W :

4 unit x RM13 = RM52

ESS LED Bulb 14W E27 3000K HV 1PF/20 AR

4 unit x RM14 = Rm56

The cost between these 2 LED light are not that expensive. But the
recommended LED light are more reliable and the power
consumed are much better than the other.

III. Sustainability

Changing to LED light can have a positive sustainable impact on

our environment. LED light are last longer than CFL light. LED has
much more sustainability than CFL light such as low maintenance
and low energy costs.

Safety precaution

 Wear safety gear to obtain data

 Wear face mask at the local shop to get the catalogue
 Sanitizing or wash hand before enter the shop

Discussion
Based on the experiment, we study the impact of LED to financial,
environmental and cultural. We also study about calculation of
electric and lighting required on the building.

Conclusion

As a conclusion, this experiment teach the used and the benefits

of the LED lights in the building. LED light can go much further in
the future and it can save environment. The development of this
LED are benefits to all people because its more efficient than the
CFL light. Low cost and eco-friendly towards the environment all
around.
