QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

SIX SIGMA
DEFINITION
Management System

MANAGEMENT SYSTEM
Methodology
Six Sigma drives strategy
execution
Leadership sponsorship and review
Metrics driven governance process
Metric
Engagement across the
organization
METRIC
Measure process
METHODOLOGY variation
Consistent use of DMAIC model Aim to minimize
Team-based problem solving defects per million
Measurement-based process analysis, opportunities
improvement, and control (DPMO), not
Guided by Black Belts, Green Belts percentages
The six sigma approach for projects is DMAIC (define,
measure, analyze, improve and control).
These steps are the most common six sigma approach
to project work. Some organizations omit the D in DMAIC
because it is really management work.
With the D dropped from DMAIC the Black Belt is
charged with MAIC only in that six sigma approach.
We believe define is too important be left out and
sometimes management does not do an adequate job
of defining a project.

DEF
EFIINE
Define the problem or Identify the problem,
define phase the answer for questions will be
found in this study such as
Who is the customer?
What matters? (CTQ-Critical to Quality)?
What’s the scope?
What Defect that will try to reduce?
MEAS
EASURE
URE
The purpose is to identify and document the
parameters (or input / variables) that affect
process performance and product
characteristics (or output variables) of critical
interest to the customer.
Data acquisition
Confirm problems
Measure quality level
ANAL
ALYSE
YSE
Analyze the system to identify ways to
eliminate the gap between the current
performance and the goal. Collect data,
identify critical variables.

IMPROVE
Improve the system. Find “y” as a function of “x”.
DOE, FMEA. Pilot improvement ideas, then
implement those that lead to quantifiable
improvements.

Seek to determine the cause-effect

relationship (mathematical relationship
between input variables and the response
variable of interest).

Refine the alternative through experiments and

simulation.
CONTROL
To reduce variation by controlling X’s (the
input) and monitoring the Y’s (the Outputs).

Ensure that improvement continues after

implementation of alternative methods

Control the new system.

Standardize, maintain improvements
