III. PROCEDURE
The procedure consists of the following:
(1) Set up Three potatoes that are utilized, two raw and one cooked. Each one has a cavity and is
placed in a water tray. The cavities of one of the raw potatoes and one of the cooked potatoes are
filled with salt. The other raw potato's cavity is left unfilled.
(2) When the potatoes are examined later, the salt in the raw potato has dissolved in water, but the
salt in the cooked potato has remained solid and has not dissolved in water.
(3) The third potato is devoid of water. This is what happened in this case. Osmosis caused the potato
cells around the salt-filled cavity to release water into the cavity. This water is taken from the
tray's water supply.
(4) The cooked potato cells are dead, osmosis does not occur. As a result, no water is pulled in,
leaving the salt dry. Because there is no salt in the third potato, the cells do not produce enough
osmotic pressure to pull in water.
