What Is SMS Texting? What Does SMS Stand For?

SMS texting stands for short message service. It is one of the oldest texting technologies and
was invented in the 1980s. It is about sending short messages to and from mobile phones. Also,
SMS text messages can use 160 characters or less for the GSM (Global System for Mobile).

How Do I Use SMS Texting?

Step 1: Open the messaging app on your mobile device.

• iPhone users: go to your home screen and tap on the messaging app with the
conversation bubble.
• Android users: go to your home screen and tap on the message icon.
Step 2: Tap compose
• iPhone users: To compose a message, tap on the pencil box to create a new message.
• Android users: Tap the new message icon in the corner of the screen.
Step 3: In the “To” section, enter the phone number
• Enter the number: 202.858.1233
• iPhone users: right next to “To”, type in the number listed above.
• Android users: type in the telephone number of the person or business you would
like to text.
Step 4: Type in message area “NJIO1”
 • iPhone users: In the message section, it says, “Text Message”. Write “NJIO1” in all
capital letters or lower-case letters.
• Android users: Use the on-screen keyboard to type your message to the recipient: The
New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra. Write out “NJIO1” in all capital letters or lower-
case letters.

Step 5: Send a message

• For all users: hit the send button once finished typing in the message.

Step 6: When ready, donate to The New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra!

• An automatic text message will be sent to the user.
o It will state: “Donate to New Jersey Intergenerational Orchestra (NJIO) here.”
o A link will be present that will take the user to the GiveButter landing page to
donate money to the music organization.
