1. Intercultural Communication
- You've undoubtedly heard the phrase "intercultural communication." The interchange of ideas
between people from various cultures is known as intercultural communication. Intercultural
communication is the process through which individuals from various cultures build common
meanings via symbolic, interpretive, transactional, and contextual means. Intercultural
communication refers to the effects on communication behavior that occur when different
cultures interact with one another; hence, one way to see intercultural communication is as
communication that takes place in symbolic intercultural spaces. These are examples of how
cultural variations have affected a communication transaction.
2. Communication and Globalization

- The globalization process has a direct impact on worldwide communication, which assists in the growth
of economic opportunities, the elimination of cultural barriers, and the establishment of a global village.
Both globalization and global communication have had an impact on the world's environmental,
cultural, political, and economic components. Communication is critical in globalization since people
from different nations, ethnicities, languages, cultural attitudes, and other elements must understand
and successfully express themselves to one another in order to work together.

3. Local and Global Communication in Multi-cultural Settings

- Cross-Cultural Communication Cross-cultural communication may be challenging. Every culture has its
own set of norms that its members follow without question. Few of us are aware of our own cultural
biases since cultural imprinting occurs at an early age. While laws, ideas, values, phobias, and anxieties
are explicitly taught in certain cultures, the bulk of information is acquired unconsciously. High Context
vs. Low Context Cultural variations affect all international communication. High-context cultures
(Mediterranean, Slavic, Central European, Latin American, Africa, Arab, Asian, and American Indian)
expect most of the meaning to be deduced from context, nonverbal cues, and reading between the lines
of what is truly said. Low-context cultures (primarily Germanic and English-speaking countries) demand
precise and detailed signals.

SEQUENTIAL VS SYNCHRONIC Some cultures perceive time as a linear commodity to be "spent,"


"saving," or "waste," whilst others consider time as a continual flow to be experienced in the present,
and as an uncontrollable force.
Businesspeople in sequential cultures (such as those seen in North America, England, Germany, Sweden,
and the Netherlands) dedicate their whole attention to one agenda item after another. In synchronic
civilizations (which include South America, southern Europe, and Asia), the passage of time is regarded
as a kind of circle, with the past, present, and future all interrelated.

AFFECTIVE VS NEUTRAL IN INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS, both logic and emotion are crucial. Which of
these takes primacy depends on whether our approach is emotive (expressing emotions freely) or
emotionally neutral. Members in neutral cultures conceal and manage their emotions rather than
telegraphing them. People in affective cultures freely show their feelings via laughter, smiles, grimacing,
scowling, and gesticulation.

4. Varieties and Registers of Spoken and Written Language

- Language varieties that are more strongly associated with the location or context in which they are
spoken than with the people who speak them are often included in the concept of register and
distinguished from one another primarily on the dimension of relative formality. Linguists have unique
names for the five recognized levels: frozen, formal, consultative, informal, and intimate. The three most
common language registers in writing are formal, informal, and neutral.

Standard English is a disputed term for a dialect of the English language used to write and converse by
educated users. According to some linguists, standard English is equivalent with excellent or correct
English use. Others use the word to refer to a distinct regional dialect of English or to the dialect of the
most powerful and influential social group.

Language variants occur as a result of a range of factors, including geographical differences; individuals
who live in different geographical locations commonly generate unique dialects—variations of standard
English. Those who belong to a specialized group, often intellectual or professional, tend to employ
jargon that only members of that group are aware of and comprehend. Individuals, too, acquire
idiolects, or distinctive speaking patterns.

5. Exploring Texts Reflecting Different Cultures

- Multicultural literature is a strong instrument for students to get a deeper knowledge of their own
culture as well as the cultures of others. Students' cognitive abilities improve as they learn to connect
with and critically assess the materials they read. A cultural text may be better understood as having
cultural levels of comprehension. Whereas people of various ages, races, nationalities, and sexual
orientations may read and interpret a set of clues in different ways.

6. Coping with the Challenges of Intercultural Communication

- The absence of common information and beliefs, as well as cultural heterogeneity, make it more
difficult to determine the proper conclusion or interpretation of meanings. However, English is now
regarded a global lingua franca. Following the merging of ASEAN, English was designated as the official
or working language. It is vital to emphasize that the English language does not belong to any one nation
or group of people who speak it as their native or home language. There is a reason why various speech
groups use different dialects of English. They use it in a group context. These variants have been greatly
influenced by the local culture and speaker. It's worth mentioning that in intercultural communication,
verbal words aren't frequently the root of misunderstanding. Miscommunications may also arise when
nonverbal cues are misread.
