Q1- How would you go about determining the location of the groundwater
table in the design soil profile?

Solution:

This is often done by installing an observation well in the completed boring to monitor
groundwater conditions. Such wells typically consist of a slotted or perforated PVC pipe as
shown in Figure 4.6. Once the groundwater level has stabilized, we can locate it by lowering a
probe into the observation well

We usually
compare observation well data with historic groundwater records, or at least consider the season
of the year and the recent precipitation patterns to determine the design groundwater level. This
design level should represent the worst (i.e., highest) groundwater level that is likely to occur
during the design life of the project. This level is often shallower than that observed in the
observation wells.
Q2- A five- Story office building is to be built on a site underlain by moderately uniform
soils. Bedrock is at a depth of over 100 m. This building will be 60 m wide and 85 m long,
and the foundations will be founded at a depth of 1.2 m below the ground surface.
Determine the required number and depth of the exploratory borings.

Solution:

A) In terms of the number of borings, the International Building Code (ICC, 2012), for built-
over areas larger than 1,860 m2 (ICC (2012) suggests at least eight borings plus at least
one additional boring for each additional 465 m 2, and according this assignment the area
of building (60*85) equal to (5100m2) larger than 1,860m2 forethese it will be account
from same guidline, and it is important to recognize that there is no single “correct”
solution for the required number and depth of borings, and these guidelines must be
tempered with appropriate engineering judgment.

B) And for finding the depth of borings it will be account according to subsurface and type
of built for example for heavy structure, at least some of the borings should be carried
down to bedrock, like this example the bedrock located 100m below surface forethese we
can define this subsurface of building to poor subsurface
The number of story is five(S=5) and the depth of foundation 1.2 m below surface
(D=1.2m) for poor subsurface it will be calculate the depth of borings as following:

depth of borings=6 *s0.7+D =6*50.7+1.2=19.71 m
